I just spent the day at the vet with Penny...she ate a dead toad...well when they eat a toad they start foaming at the mouth...drooling...lethargic...get REALLY sick and to make it worse she ate it whole and the skeleton is in her tummy.......x-rays...poisen control call...vet check...special food I have to feed her a TABLESPOON at a time...what an ordeal!!! She is out cold on the dining room floor now...and doing much better...poor baby was sooo sick...now we just have to pray that she passes the skeleton without any issues...UGH! I am so glad that she is ok...scared the heck out of me! I got a brochure on pet insurance...Have any of you looked into that?

I didn't know eating toads could make them that sick. Since my cat only suffered from minor drooling and fatigue when she ate one, when Didi inevitably tried I just set her up in her crate with tons of water and some calming music(you know, for the come-down).

Jaunty licked a toad one night, and didn't like the taste (shook his head with drool going every where) so he leaves them alone now. I got two months free of pet insurance through the AKC when I registered him, and plan on continuing it after the two months. Hope Penny recovers quickly, and learns a lesson!

"..my little girl seems to think anything she finds she should put in her mouth." Gus is exactly the same way. I know something similar could happen to him anytime.

I hope Penny gets better soon.

I hope Penny is feeling better soon!

I have PetPlan insurance for Tucker. I have read a lot of good things about the company - and they are one of the only companies that covers hereditary diseases. I pay $23/month and have a $200 deductible and then 100% coverage after that up to $8,000/yr. You can lower the deductible but that increases your monthly rate fast - I really just want it so if he needs expensive surgery or treatment I know he will be able to have it.

Our corgi, Buffy bit one once. Fortunately she spit it out but we had the foaming and the upset tummy. Scary! You would think it would pass alright. The raw diet taken to the extreme..... Hope she is ok. I always find them to be a little too curious for their own good.

I hope Penny gets back on her paws soon! We've had great experiences with Pets Best Insurance. They were amazing when our dog got sick, very upfront about what is covered, they're super nice and reimburse you very quickly. There is a one time $75 deductible per incident, then you're reimbursed 80% of the total cost. The coverage is great for the price you pay per month.

Thanks for the info...my little girl seems to think anything she finds she should put in her mouth...I hate to have to leash her when she is outside since she loves to run around the yard...but this was pretty scarey!

I've looked into the ASPCA insurance. For what you pay, it seems a little high but the kickbacks are good. They pay a good portion of emergency vet visits for starters. It depends on which plan you do. They have I believe 4 different levels.

Good thing it wasn't a Bufo Frog. Or it could have been fatal.
