So I finished the majority of my shopping in preparation to bring my new baby boy home next weekend. I was approached by several employees, asking if I was going to enroll my pup in the training programs they have. Since it is a smaller store, I will probably end up taking him to train there since the classes are smaller. My only apprehension is, the first puppy class is said to start when they are 10 weeks old. Is it safe to bring a puppy around other dogs when they have not received all of their shots? Should I wait till he is a little older?

We waited until Finn had all of his shots. Our vet recommended this. Until he could go to the class, we just did a lot of basic obedience at home. By the time he got to the class he already knew sit, down and stay. :)

Really, the vet's office is one of the most dangerous places to take your puppy. Just don't let him run around the store (or vet's office for that matter). In class all of the dogs's owners have to show paper work that their dogs are up to date on shots. If they do not do this, I would find another place for classes. I have always carried my puppies into the vet office until they have all their shots. Same with any dog busy place. I have heard the receptionist at my vet office tell people with very young puppies not to let them explore in the waiting room.

We began Harley's puppy training at Petsmart at 12 weeks. The trainer told us that he needed to be up to date with shots for his age. All dogs that are in the training area have to be up to date (they require vaccination records before beginning the class). Until he got the rabies shot, we carried him everywhere.

Thanks for all the feedback. It is so confusing! I want my dog to be well socialized, yet I don't want him to get sick either.

Odin started last week. he is 4 months. If your in a pup class you will be fine because most pups will still be finishing up their shots too. The only reason I waited this long to take him was due to Christmas break with school. I do lots of training at home, and its a plus that my trainer is my best friend. So when shes over we work on him:)

I wouldnt recommend taking a 10 week pup around others. Parvo is a very serious illness and even though your puppy has had a few vaccines its not enough to be protected. We recommend people to make sure they vaccinate pups every 3 weeks starting at 8 weeks (some breeders will start at 6 weeks.. that is the right way to do it). When they reach 16 weeks then they will be ready to adventure out into the bigger world. By then they would have finished their vaccines with rabies for a whole year.

I started taking Stanley to Petsmart's training classes at 10 weeks old. They require all the dogs enrolled in the class to be up to date on their shots so at least you know the other dogs in class will be okay. I think it's good to start socializing them at a young age so 10 weeks is a good time to start the classes.

Good luck! I think you & your puppy will really enjoy it!
