We took our boy to the vet last night for his first puppy exam with us (the breeder took him for his first shots at 8wks). And all good reports (for the most part)! He weighed in at a hefty 7.15lbs! I can't wait until we are able to take him out and walk him, he has so much pent up energy! We do our best to excercise him properly around the house and in the yard, but nothing beats going for a long walk. We learned an imense amount of information, and even got to chat with a vet tech that has a 12 mo. old corgi, so she could really relate to the minor puppy issues we have been experiencing. We promissed them that we would have a name picked out by the time we bring him back next week, so hopefully we can meet that deadline, haha.

The puppy has been acting out, and displaying some bad behavior during the last couple days and we wanted to make sure we mentioned this at the appointment. The vet said, and I quote "I can tell that you have a very dominant puppy, and he has you wrapped around his little paw". Yes this is true, we have been too accomidating to his every whim, but in our defense, we have just been trying to work out a good schedule, and his little whimpers just melt our hearts!

So in order to control some of the bad behavior, the vet recommended that we try putting the leash on him while he is in the house, and I have to say that I really liked how this worked out, even though we only just tried it last night. Our boy tends to wander and find things to chew on and he has had a couple accidents so atleast this way hes always close to me. Whenever he starts chewing I can briefly tug the leash (dog whisper method lol) and he immediately stops what he is doing and goes about his business! I tried walking him around the house with the leash on, and thats where I am having difficulites at the moment. He does pretty well, but tends to flail around and chew on the leash a lot. So hopefully with some dedication and daily practice, he will be comfortable to go on his first walk next week once he gets his next shots.

Other than that all was well and we are pretty happy with the vet we chose and look forward to future visits.

I remember the puppy days like they were yesterday and I miss them. I will share what I learned and hopefully you can understand I am not preaching, just offering advice. Take him to puppy class so he learns to socialize. Most puppy classes also include basic obediance. I would limit your on-leash time to maybe fifteen minute blocks to avoid separation anxiety later. The lining of the couch may be the least of your worries if he develops separation anxiety. As a herder by nature, he will eventually be close to you because he "needs" to. I love that Gryffin keeps the cats out of the basement because he knows I don't want them down there. My 4 1/2 year old still plays with the leash. Whenever I take him for a run, he HAS to have the leash in his mouth or I fall over him running around me. If it is in his mouth, he is great. I have no idea what that is about but it is so funny. I am curious what names you are throwing around. I love a good Welsh name!! Enjoy puppy time!!

He sounds like an "Indiana Jones" to my.....you could call him "Indy" for short.

Something magical happened to Jackson at around 10 weeks where he started to understand words. Just be consistent, and he should be able to recognize the inflection and tone in your voice.
My roommates probably don't appreciate me and my over the top praise for a potty on the pad, or constant "No, no, HEY, NO!"'s at all times of the day -- but I swear it has paid off.
Jackson's favorite thing to do is eat the lining under the couch, and now when he does this, I can simply say, "HEY!" or "NO! Come here," and he stops and comes to me.
I'm trying to be careful with my pup because while you want to raise them with a good set of rules and boundaries, I know that my guy is going to grow out of a lot of things. Like scooting underneath furniture and being food obsessed.

The most important thing is to have fun! Your little guy looks great and a lot of us are growing alongside with you...

Good luck finding a name! That should really help with training :)
