Howdy all! I'm so glad drag is back to his old self again, after a long recovery for both of us.

Thanks for all your help and concerns. I love you guys!

Anyway i have a question about drags eating habits. He's eating double of what he usually eats. Do you think its from the medicine? He eats alot in the morning, which he used to never do. He usually always ate at 9pm and thats the only time he would eat, eventhough i left food out for him 24/7.

He is on Doxycycline 100mg
and Prednisone 20mg

and i have to continue out his Dox med's until they are gone.. at least that's what i says.. but there are sooo many left. Like about 20.

I didn't know Prednisone caused increased appetite, but I have heard that it can cause weight gain--maybe that's why!

Hey Dragster and Bailee, it is important that you finish the Doxycycline, it's an antibiotic and they need to be finish in "courses" to complete the entire cycle. Prednisone is nasty stuff, it is recommended that you have food in your stomach before taking any, or else it'll give you nasty stomach ache, some of the side effect is water re-tension, the patient will get thirsty easily and tend to dehydrate easily, it is a steroid and it can contribute to face swelling and trunk area putting on extra pounds, appetite usually increase, you may find your dog acting "funny" sometimes, that's from the side effect, it is normal to see him a little "depress" once he stop taking it. Due to the stomach ache nature of this drugs, doc usually prescribe "pepcid" to make the patient feel better.

My boy is on prednisone right now - he had it one time before so I knew he would eat like crazy and be just alittle off of his game. Our doc says that it is normal.....good luck on keeping him slim and trim!!!

Yep, it's the Prednisone causing his appetite increase. Just don't give him more than you usually do. I had to take Prednisone for an allergic reaction to some medication and I about ate us out of house and home (or so my husband said)
Also, make sure you give him ALL of his meds, even if he seems to be feeling better.

I am sorry to hear that Drags has been feeling down but I have alway heard that a good appetite is a major sign of good health. I just had my "old man" physcal and it seems that about the only thing wrong with me is that I may be eating a bit to much. However, the doctor said that I would be thankful for that extra body mass as I got older. I am not sure how to interpret that but being an optimist I think it is kind of like saying your fat but we sure enjoy your shade. I guess that I am not much of a help with your question but the picture of Drags on the night stand is what caught my attention.

Bear starts out the night sleeping in the crook of my knees. As I toss and turn a bit (bad shoulder hurts) he moves up and flops against my back where he stays until I start to moan and toss again and then he growls at me and climbs onto my night stand for the night. I was sure that I was the only person in the world with a dog that sleeps on the night stand.

I'm reading something on this drugs.com website, haha yes it's a legit site! Even though this is recorded side effects in humans, I'm sure it will also affect dogs:
Prednisone-
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: Difficulty sleeping; feeling of a whirling motion; INCREASED APPETITE; increased sweating; indigestion; mood changes; nervousness.

It also says that Doxycycline could cause a loss of appetite so who knows. Maybe they're just messing with him a bit so he's really hungry sometimes and not so hungry other times.
