Today Rocky had his last set of shots from the vet until he gets neutered. Sadly, I'm waiting until morning to see if he makes it through the night. About two hours after he got his rabies shot, he laid down for a nap (after having dinner, playing fetch, barking at the cat.../sigh, and snuggling me) and when he woke up went to mess with his water bowl. I hadn't looked at him in about 20 minutes, and then saw his face and eyes were so swollen up that he almost didn't look like a corgi. I felt so bad at not having looked at him, but its not uncommon for him to nap at that time of night. So we drove back to the vet for an emergency visit for steroids, etc and a wonderful overnight stay.

I believe strongly in getting all the proper shots for your puppy, but I am really upset and didn't know the rabies shot could have such a bad reaction. I mean, I understand anyone animal or human can be allergic to anything, but that doesn't change my feelings or worry about my poor little puppy. I wrote to his breeder to alert her that his siblings may have similiar allergies.

What a stressful night... 2 emergency trips to the vet so far. Still love the puppy though.

I wonder if anyone else here has had a similiar experience.

Hi John, my vet said not to give the liquid because of the alcohol content maybe?? He advised me to give one pink tablet for Lola and she is 25 pounds

Hi John, I have never given my dog benedryl before, but there are liquid caps and children's formula version.

Good luck! I've never experienced anything like that w/any dog I've owned, thank goodness. I would be panic stricken as well. Keep us updated.

How do you administer Benadryl to a dog? How much for a 20-27 lb. corgi?
I usually have some of those shocking-pink tablets around, but for a dog, are there liquid or children's formulations?

My pup recently had an allergic reaction with face swelling (I think to pesticide in the yard, but we're not sure) and it was delayed nearly 24 hours, so I don't know if a delay is weird. Though with a shot... makes sense it could be sudden.

If they try a different manufacturer, they often use different excipients in the vaccine and he might not have the same reaction? So find out what they used to avoid that brand.

Are you sure it would've killed your pup? Pooka just had a 24 hour run of Benadryl and she was fine. We waited 3 days before letting her try the yard again and she's had no further reaction (this is why we're not sure it was the yard, but it had rained a few times, so it may have washed away)

Sorry to hear about your problem, hope he's doing okay today. We haven't experienced this with shots either, only bee stings. However, my vet does not give more than one or two shots per visit -- he likes to space them out, because he thinks they are very taxing on a puppy's system. And they are serious medicine, so sensitivity could happen.

Becka please keep us updated on Rocky and know that you are in our thoughts.

Could he of been bitten by something in the house - a spider or something.

The delayed reaction is weird...

It is scary - Byron had a simular reaction to what I suspect was a bee sting

What a scary thing to happen - we hope your baby is ok. Charlie has never had an immediate reaction like that but I have read that they are finding a link between vaccinations and allergies. Charlie has had allergies since his 2 year combo boosters. Let us know how your baby is doing.
