Today was the big day; our first visit to a facility after passing the Therapy dog exam. My daughter was nervous (she's Sidney's handler) and Sidney was just excited to be going out for a ride!
In our group was a standard poodle, a toy poodle and a cockapoo. Our first stop was an activity room for patients with memory problems. These residents were a bit older and we less alert, so the interaction with the dogs was more limited. Sidney was not nervous at all, more curious about all the people and the different smells.
The next area we visited was in the Senior apartments area. These folks are more independent and more mobile. This area was much more fun; we were able to hold conversations and some of the residents bring bags of treats for the dogs. Sidney, being a corgi, made fast friends with the folks with treats and we had to literally drag him away to meet other folks...and to stop him from overeating. The folks just loved feeding the dogs. I think next time I'll bring Charlee Bears and give the residents some of those to feed Sidney. They are healthier and only 3 calories each.
One gentleman pointed out a fellow in a wheelchair. He told me "See that guy..he's new, and this is the first time I've ever seen him smile"...that made it all worthwhile!
Sidney was SO tired after visiting!
