Last night I got three hours of sleep. Around 3ish, Dixie started whining and barking at me from her crate. I tried moving the night light around the room, I checked around her crate and pads for her prizes, and I even tried sleeping with my fingers through her crate bars. However, she kept crying and barking. I was afraid that any moment one of my neighbors would start pounding on my door.

So today, I am trying a little experiment with sleep cycling. We played at 7PM for about 1.5 hours until I noticed her closing her eyes. Then I did my best to keep her awake for another 30 minutes: play dancing with her, playing fetch, tug of war, and her favorite game -- towel escape.

When she went flat on the floor, I put her in her crate and set a timer for 1 hour. After the hour passed, I picked up drowsy Dixie and started initiating play with her after I fed her and watered her. After a hour she was droopy and less playful so I picked her up and put her in the crate. When she readily balled up on her bed, I knew I was onto something.

So today it has been 1 hour up - 1 hour down. My hope is to keep her somewhat tired so that she sleeps through the night.

Also, hat tip to Atlas & Trinity, I am going to run out for a couple cans of crushed pineapple. After kibble today, Dixie decide to eat a few samples of her handiwork. Hopefully the pineapple trick works when I feed her at 6PM today and she stops deciding to eat her poop.

Let me know what you think about my sleep cycling innovation. :)

The first night with Lucy (she was 9 weeks), she whimpered some around 2 am, but ever since then she has gone through the night without any "issue." She is able, miraculously, to control her bladder until around 5:30 am or so (when I have to get up anyway) when I let her out. I don't know whether I am just lucky or whether my two walks per day (30-45 minutes per walk) have helped. I also use, on advice from my vet, D.A.P ("comfort" phermones delivered by diffuser). I have one plugged in the bedroom where she crate-sleeps and in my livingroom, where she spends most of the day, either in her crate (when I am out) or playing about. I'm convinced the DAP plays a role in how well she spends the night. One night without it, because I had no refill, she barked at 2:30 am and had a hard time settling down (she will quiet down within a couple of minutes if I simply ignore her noise-making--as long as I am sure it is not a potty issue!). The next night with the refill plugged in, nothing--not a sound. In fact she is so reliable with a quick woof at 5:30 or 5:45 am, I'm wondering if I need my alarm clock at all!

For my students (I'm a dog trainer) for puppies having a hard time sleeping you can stuff a kong with a little peanut butter or cream cheese (less is more in this case) freeze it and give it right before bed time. Lets say it acts like a little lullaby for puppies. Sometimes just being in the same room helps with the crying. So you could move crate in the same room as you. This will also help if we have "I have to pee/poo NOW"

when she's 10 week get her in classes the day she has class she will be super tired cause of the mental exercise. I would work her probably 5-10 mins learning a new behavior that will help in more then one way.

She was quiet through last night except when I got up to check on the condition of her potty pad. She would whine after i crawled back in bed for about 5-10 minutes. I think she developed a comforting relationship with her Kong monkey because now she carries it to any room she will be in and whines if I don't put her monkey in the crate with her.

She is also really meticulous about the pad's cleanliness. She will whine and hold her business until I put a fresh pad down and this is when there are only two half dollar sized pee stains on the pad :(.

She'll get better over time. The first few nights when they're home, they can be a little rowdy because they're scared, but once they get used to you and figure out your sleeping patterns, they usually adjust themselves to those hours as well.

Chicken Piccata anyone? Notice how she chose the cool wood floor over her nice new bed and bully stick.

Success!

Her last wake up today was around 730ish.

We played for two hours straight with some downtime for potty and water breaks.

At 935PM she surrender and kept curling up into a ball or doing the flattened chicken. So I crated her. Hopefully she sleeps soundly through tonight.
