I hope someone out there can cure my worries. We got a new corgi in February. He seemed very normal till now.
He is 8 months old and his weight is about 12 pound. We saw a corgi over the weekend the same age as Max and he was twice his size and weight. Do I have a mini Corgi? The breeder just keeps saying he is going to be small.

My vet thought the same thing about Freya. Since she's only 9 months old and most likely still 18 pounds (at least last we weighed her) she still has some growing to do. I don't know if she'll get heavier or not as she has been the same weight for almost 3 months now. Her dad was the small one at 20 or 22 pounds and mom was 30. It was accidental breeding on the owner's part as her foster (the dad) managed to do some acrobatic tricks to get to Freya's mom.

As long as his weight is healthy for his size you are good to go. Vets really are generally not familiar with breed standards but surely can tell you if he is at a healthy weight. He surely sounds quite undersized but makes him no less of a great companion.

Jack, my Giant Corgi, was not by a long shot the biggest in the litter when he was born. I don't know that you can tell by puppy size just how big they will get. And some litters do have an obvious "runt" but certainly not all of them.

If you read the breed history, their origin is uncertain and until not that long ago Cardigans and Pembrokes were freely interbred. We all know that Cardis are a bit bigger than Pems. My guess is there was always a fairly wide size difference, and it's just the show standard that settled on the medium sized dogs. When I look at Jack, he's a very substantial dog with good bone and well-sprung ribs, and I can easily imagine him being a farm dog.

Chloe is small, 22 lbs. My 1st Corgi was way oversize, it looked best a 42 lbs, as what vet wanted. Both came from very reputable breeders, but genticss is funny.

Thanks for all your help. I have been to my vet and he thinks he is just going to be really small. I did get him from a great breeder and we are going to see her on Thursday. I got my other corgi from her. Hard to believe but Max was not the runt. I know the mother and father corgi and was able to spend several times with the whole litter. Max is a great little dog with lot and lots of energy.

I think that talking to your vet is a good idea too. My tri will be smaller but stiil will weigh about 25 #'s.She has champ bloodlines and will be on the smaller side but whether big or small corgi's are corgis...and you have to love them! There have been 2-3 places recently that I have read the weight for corgis is 22-38#'s it was not AKC guidline but somplace I looked up on the computer...now I realize that show dogs need to be a certain size. Has anyone else seen this???

I agreee with having the vet check him out.. but I have a 20 month old male and female (siblings) and the male is 38 lbs. but not overweight.. he's just a bigger Corgi. He's even at least 1 inch taller then his sister. He wouldn't qualify for "show" but to me he's beautiful. Your baby is a georgous Corgi!

I agree talking to the vet is probably a good idea, just to be safe.

We tend to associate undersized dogs with puppy mills, it's true. However, my dog came from a good breeder and is 2 inches too tall and nearly 10 pounds heavy for the breed standard. And yet his littermate sister has done some winning; I was just looking at a show result and she made it to best-of-breed ring, though they unfortunately didn't have the final results so I don't know how she did.

Genetics is a funny thing, and your cute little guy might just be programmed to be small, even if his parents weren't undersized.
Comment by Nicole, Stanley and STELLA! on August 4, 2009 at 10:17pm
It does seem like he's about half the size compared to Stella. She's a little over 4 months old and weighed 12.5 pounds when I took her to the vet a couple of days ago. Stella wasn't the runt, so I'm not sure how much Corgi runts tend to weigh. I would check with the vet (and maybe even get a second opinion) to see if there is a medical problem causing his smallness. I was looking at his pictures on your site and he's sooooo adorable! So if there's no medical issue to worry about, it just might be that you have a tiny, super cute corgi!
