Whew! It has been a week full of painting, unpacking, and vetting. The house is coming along nicely, although there is still a lot of work to be done, and it's in that "it always looks worse before it looks better" stage right now. The animals, however, are all conspiring against me to my life as stressful as they can.

Izzy, the cat, was diagnosed with Inflammed Bowel Disease about a month ago and put on a food trail. I called the vet yesterday to say things were going great and is the course of treatment to just continue using this food, and literally an hour after I called the vet, she started getting sick. I haven't been able to speak to the vet yet (she is suppsoed to be calling me back) but hopefully this doesn't put us back at trying to find a different diagnosis again.

Sky, the Aussie, is my dog that I always said has managed to come down with every ailment a dog could get (UTI, random bacterial shift in the intestines, bordetella, pink eye... I didn't even know dog's could get pink eye, etc.). I should know better than to say things like that! I took him to the vet with Lyla on Saturday just to get him weighed and have the vet check out a hot spot on his side. Turns out the hot spot was Demodectic Mange. Oh the joys! The vet put him on daily Ivermectin, which I am very uncomfortable with because all of the literature I've read on Aussies says they are not supposed to get Ivermectin. Aussie are a "collie breed" and Ivermectin has the possiblity to be lethal to collie breeds due to a gene mutation. My vet, however, didn't seem at all aware of this or even the least bit concerned when I brought it up. I am now super paranoid and watching Sky like a hawk for the slightlest little change that might indicate a reaction to the drug.

Lyla, my sweet puppy, is having the odd, thick, cloudy urine issue. Again, my vet didn't seem concerned because she didn't have any other symptoms of a UTI. (At this point, I'm getting a little concerned with how unconcerned my vet is about things) The biggest problem is, I've only had her for a week, so things that could be symptoms of a problem, I might be confusing with her personality. For example, since the day I brought her home, she has always drank a lot of water. This could be a symptom of a UTI or it could be that she just drinks more than my Sky did at that age. It's hard to tell as I have nothing to compare it to.

Ahhhh, the joys of pet ownership! Maybe one of these days the planets will align and all get all three animals healthy at the same time! ;)

Food for thought....in my years with herding breeds I have found that I like a vet who also works with large animals. Most of them have livestock and have been around are particular breeds a great deal. I think they are more in tune to what is ok and what is not. I use a vet in Coweta.
