I haven't told my family about our puppy, Ein.

Thoughts?

How do you tell your family that you are spending a bunch of money on a puppy, and avoid the condescending responses? I know we have made the right choice, regardless of other's opinions and wishes. We have been planning for this for over a year, now. It probably would be easier if they knew that haha but we thought we'd be getting a puppy in March and our little Ein came sooner than expected. And I am going to tell them, there are no worries there. I just wonder the best way to do it?

Les thinks we should show up at their house with the puppy for Christmas. I feel like that's rude... everyone should know when they have a puppy coming to visit. Right?

I want to do it in person, because I want to see their faces! :) But they live far from me, and I'll likely have to do it over the phone.

oh, and can you tell them VIA skype? that was you can see their faces at least. i have the SAME situation with ours and my parents.  i flat out told them how much he was. mostly cuz i am a big kid, married, kid buying a house. its my prerogative to spend my hard earned money on what i want. and honestly in the end....all that matters is that we gota puppy now!

We have family welcoming parties when We get new pups!!Of course after a few days or so for acclimation.Usually bbq or a big potluck.Don't hide, besides is it really anybody's business how much you pay for a new furbaby?Kinda rude to ask anyone,I think :).

We lied about the price to some of our more frugal relatives.  In the end, I dunno if I care if they find out the true price.  Leena has been amazing, truly like a child to my wife and I.

You know, I've been giving this post some thought off and on, and it got me to thinking about other things we spend our money on.  There are so many gadgets these days.  Someone can drop down $1500 on a television, maybe another $200 for a sound system, $500 or more for a computer.  So why should someone feel ashamed for paying a lot for a living, breathing companion?  Studies have shown, again and again, that having a pet can add healthy years onto a person's life.  A pet provides comfort, joy and companionship.  They help to keep you onto a schedule (mine must be fed before 9 am or things start to get ugly ;) ), they get you out walking whether you like it or not, they alert you when something is wrong (even if it's just the neighbor coming home at an odd hour, hehe) and they never judge you, no matter what you've done.

So don't worry about it if someone tries to give you a hard time.  Your little bundle of fluff will do more for you than any of those gadgets ever could!

I know I already posted on this, but I just felt the need to get that out there.  :)  Oh, and definitely tell them before just showing up with a puppy in tow.  Puppies are a handful and I'm sure they'll appreciate the heads-up.

Ein is a keeper for sure! Did you decide to tell you parents? I'm trying to remember how I told my family. I know my last hamster had died a week before and my husband said I had been moping around (I had both hamsers for 3 years. It was sad not having an animal to take care of) and told me to start looking. By chance, I found a breeder who had one male puppy for sale. We e-mailed back and forth for 3 days and then went to see him. One look at him and he was coming home with us. I remember being so excited that we stopped at my brother and sister-in-laws house on the way home to show Noodles off. They loved him and their boys loved him. After we got home, I called the rest of my family to tell them our exciting news and within a couple of days, everyone had stopped by our place to see him. They all fell-in love with him and they are proud Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents and cousin's of Noodles.  Seriously, who can resist a corgi puppy?

Once they lay eyes on Mr. Flooff....well, 'nuff said.  But do definitely let them know you'd like to bring the pup...  Talk to them on the phone and send pictures!!!!  Bring all the gear (pads, pen, crate, stuff like that) to prevent (as much as possible) any accidents.  I'm being naive, I know, but how could the not love that adorable little poopster??????

I was in the same situation when I brought Harrison home after 4 months ago. I just showed up and was like guess what!? And in walked the cutest puppy they had ever seen! So let them fall in love with him first! Of course, the money thing might come up , which in my case it did. But only because corgis are so rare (they had never seen one before). They all agreed he was well worth the money (plus, he was was a gift). And now my mom and 2 brothers all want a corgi of their own! lol.   Best of Luck!  And congrats on the fur baby he's too cute!

They used to have a dog in that house. He was our family dog and was awesome .... he passed over the summer at about 12 years old. :( he had lots of hip problems. They often dogsit for my brother, and my other brother always brings his 2 Pomeranians with him when he visits Christmas Eve. They definitely love animals, and would not leave anything dangerous in Eins reach.
