Our local Petland has had the cutest corgi puppy for almost a month now. My family has named him Oliver and we visit him at least once a week. I feel so bad for him because he is getting bigger and bigger but his cage is not. Everytime my sister or I are in there we carry him around and answer the questions of the people in there because people in this area have no idea what a corgi is. I feel so bad for him and am torn at moments like this. I hate puppy mills and the people that think of animals as stock and products to bank on. But what will become of this poor creature if no one claims him? I asked a sales lady the last time I was in there and she stated the standard "he'll go back to his breeder if he can't find a home here and they will place him somewhere else". I fear that the somewhere else will be doggy heaven. This is how we actually came to own our corgi Lucy. She sat in our local Petland and we watched her price dip from $1500 to $290. The store was ready to ship her back but we had fallen in love. She was six months old when we "adopted" her. Now Oliver is here and I take some of the blame because they sold one corgi so they ordered another. I just want to sweep Oliver up and tell the owner to stop buying Corgis from these so called breeders because we can't keep buying them all and no one else in this area will. Poor things. And that is my love/hate relationship with Petland.

Just in case you were wondering... Oliver is no longer at Petland. I hope that he is safe, warm and fed. At least the torture has ceased. Poor guy...I miss him already.

What a tough situation. I hope Oliver finds a loving home.

Wow, you're in such a heartbreakingly difficult position, I can feel your pain! It's so hard not to feel attached to this little guy, especially since you know the plight he's in and what his fate may be, but if you rescue him you'll create that much more suffering for other corgis in puppy mills... I think just by visiting him and educating others about corgis and the evilness of puppy mills, you're doing the most humane thing you can possibly do. And I applaud you for putting your feelings aside and doing the right thing!

Kerby, thanks for sharing this. Boy, do I know how you feel. The stupid Bark Avenue near us (the one I wrote was closed down again the 2nd time) had a corgi and he was gorgeous. They eventually sold him for $1500. I know the puppy mill they got him from. Let's just say they made a killing on the price. Kerby, I'm preaching to the choir when I say we can't save them all. We'll be praying little Oliver finds a good home.

Hey Kerby, thanks for sharing your thoughts, I can certainly relate to how you feel, our recent foster corgi was also from petland, he was purchased 4 years ago and due to family reasons, he was surrendered to our rescue, he was such a perfect dog, handsome, loyal, potty trained, crate trained, even knows how to fetch! May be you can lend a hand to your local corgi rescue? You may not able to adopt one, but you can definitely help foster, or be a driver and help with transportation?
