Happy Jack and I became buddies 6 years ago today and we've been fast friends since.
When I was a little girl we had a Corgi named Sammy (Samantha). My parents owned a Corgi because they were "horse people" when they were younger and fell in love with the breed. I adored the dog but she died of old age while I was still just a young child. In 2004 my mother passed and my dad had been gone since '88. I was an "orphan". I had been wanting a Corgi for a while but I traveled with my work and wouldn't have been able to give a dog the proper attention. I had stopped traveling when my mom became ill, so once she was gone it seemed the perfect time to bring a dog into my life. And it had to be a Corgi.
As I started looking for breeders I found many in other states that were willing to put a puppy on a plane for me or meet me somewhere with a puppy. That didn't sit well with me personally. I had a notion that I needed to know for sure that a pupply liked me as much as I was drawn to the puppy. Kind of like people....you don't know if the chemistry is there until you look someone in the eyes :-) So I found a breeder in my state and made the drive to visit with the puppies.
As I walked into the barn and up to the stall where the puppies were kept, several puppies ran up to the gate...jumping, yipping...one cuter than the next as they were vying for attention. It was puppy pandemonium :-) And then I noticed one little guy that was still in the back of the stall playing with a toy...he couldn't have cared less about showing off for me...he was busy enjoying himself. I knew instantly that he was my dog. That was the one for me. I identified with him immediately....doing his own thing, not begging for attention from a random passerby :-) It's been a love story of a girl and her dog ever since.
I've still got his "baby" collar. I still remember how astonished I was by how quickly he was house trained...and how slowly he learned to walk down steps. I recall the first time he barked...it startled both of us...LOL He had one ear up before the other, but I was already in love so I didn't care if the other one ever stood up (and he was so darned cute with one floppy ear). I was truly excited when he lifted his leg to pee for the first time...we didn't care if he had a floppy ear, but didn't want him to be a girly-dog...LOL
Reminiscing today :-) Hugs to all that have been fortunate enough to love a Corgi and have a Corgi love you right back! ~The End <teeheee>
