Well, tomorrow is the day we're going to visit the shelter (4.5 hours away) and meet the Corgi we really hope to take home. And boy, am I excited and nervous, so I hope I can sleep tonight. We bought most of the stuff we will need for the trip home with him (fingers crossed). Here's a list of stuff we're bringing:

Leash
Car harness
Treats
Stuffed toy
Doggy bags
Doggy wipes
Water with a bowl
Sheet
Towel

And here's our plan: We're driving there tomorrow morning and will meet him whenever we get there. If they decide we are the right people to give him his forever home they will take him to get neutered the next day. We booked a cheap hotel to stay the night so we won't have to make the drive twice and so we can bring him home as soon as possible. We'll drape a sheet with a towel under it over the back seats (the towel only because it's a long drive and we don't know if he will get car sick) and secure him with the car harness. I really hope he'll be comfortable, especially since he will have just come out of surgery hours earlier. Will he most likely just be out of it the whole way home? I'm hoping so because I can't imagine being woozy and in pain and in a moving car for hours would feel very good. Anyway, we'll buy a crate for him and his food after we meet him and the shelter staff (to see how big he is, and also to ask if he has any known allergies or intolerances).

We still haven't picked a name!

Keep us in your prayers!

He is so good looking! You might want to ride in the back seat with him so he has a chance to groggily bond with you. Good luck!

I'm so sorry, I must still be half asleep. I do see you will meet him BEFORE the operation! LOL Pardon my mistake.

Good luck, and I hope he works out for you!

Good luck! Have you met him before? Not trying to be a downer, but I don't know how you'll assess his personality if he's just come out of surgery.

My male rides in a harness but honestly if he was getting surgery I'd put him in a crate so he could curl up and snooze. The males only get an Advil-type pain reliever during surgery (at least at my vet's) so they are not as groggy. Females get morphine (at least mine did) for the spay and so are totally out of it.

I understand why people like to crate their dogs in cars but I find it terribly unsafe- and so would go with the car harness all the way. It won't be near his op site- mine didn't have a problem with it when we got him and hopefully your soon to be pup will be fine with it too. A few treats may help settle him down and reassure him. I'd ask of he'll be given pain relief after his neutering. Some vets do this automatically, others give extra pain relief for a small fee.

If he doesn't pee before you get in the car just look for signs that he's starting to get fidgety- hopefully despite the op he'll be alert. We got Po as a 12 week pup and he didn't whine when he left his mum, only when he needed to get out of the car and pee.

Good luck! Let us know how it all goes!

when pooka got spayed (neuter may be different) she just wanted to sleep/cuddle, but was in too much pain. As soon as I gave her the pain pill she was out. Car rides ALSO put her to sleep. So hopefully he'll just sleep the whole way =)

Best of luck, he's a cutie pie, I hope you get him!
If you can borrow a crate from someone, I'd suggest bringing that for the ride. He might not be very comfortable in a car harness, as he is probably not used to one, and he'll be stressed from all the new things as is :)

What a handsome tri! Good luck to you!

Is that a photo of your little guy? A blackfaced tri? Or still a young pup?
If it's a young pup, you can buy an adult-sized crate and make a movable plywood partition with a saber saw; downsize the crate while he's small and move the partition back as he grows; just make sure it's secure.
