I have read the posts on here about which vacuum to use in homes with corgis.  My question is what is the difference between a vacuum and a vacuum with the word PET in front of it?

We have a 3-4 year old Dyson vacuum.  Since we have adopted LeeLoo, it has slowly started to die.  I cleaned it last night and gobs and gobs of hair and dirt were jammed in the hose up to the canister.  Do PET vacuums not have this problem?

We need a new vacuum fast!  I have researched all recommendations and it seems to be between the Dyson animal ($500+!) or a Hoover Windtunnel such-n-such.  All suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Rebeca.  I have often wondered if that would work better.  We have one particular thin rug that it is in the heaviest lane of traffic in our house and it seems to suffer the most.  I have to spend about 10 minutes trying to get all of the hair off the rug with the vacuum.

In addition to a good vacuum, I have a carpet rake (only for cut pile, not berber). I do a quick rake of our rugs before I vacuum, which gets up most of the fur and saves the vacuum for the hard surfaces and anything too small for the rake. We still have to change the vacuum bag more often than in pre-corgi life, but it works well for us.....

We just bought ours (Eureka Pet Expert $99) and it came with extra attachments for pets and an item that allows you to get pet hair off of surfaces like couches and beds. Uh, honestly here, we hadn't cleaned dog hair for a looong time since we thought our old vac was doing it but uh ... when we moved out, this thing picked up on all of the hair the other vac missed. My gosh do corgis shed.

I've never had anything better than an ElCheapo cannister from a yard or rummage sale.  I wheel missing, and the hose is almost 50% wrapped in duct tape by now.  15 years old at least.  When you clean as seldom as I do, they last longer perhaps.

You do have to inspect a vacuum regularly for obstructions and leaks.  Don't suck up things like toothpicks that will jam the airflow.  If you operate it with a full bag or obstructed airflow, you will of course stress and overheat the motor.  Bad.  I always write the date of a bag change on it with a Sharpie pen.

This is a really good idea for any kind of regular chore (flea poison, furnace air filters, oil changes...) -- write the date on your calendar or on the device.  People ask why Gwynnie has a date written on her forehead....

:)

This may be why we buy new vacuums every year!  I never knew you had to clean them...and evidently my husband is too lazy to want to do it!

no problem, that looks like a DC07? Here's a more relavent cleaning method.

Thank you so much, Sam.  This will help me tonight when I continue trouble shooting the issue.  The vacuum came with my husband when we got married and I would have thought he would have filled me in on the maintenance schedule!  To me, the problem seemed to only be in the hose going up to the canister.  I will take this new information and see if I can't get it back to running like new.  Thanks!

Hi Stephanie, the main difference between the Dyson Pet and regular Dyson line is the spinbrush, it also comes with a handheld spin brush head attachment, that's all. Other brands incorporate silicon in their attachment head, you can purchase just the attachement in the rescue store.

For a Dyson, you need to open it up twice a year to do maintenance, take out a philips screw driver, open the cyclone and clean / wash the inside. Once you're done, it'll be as good as new. Remember, all vacuum needs schedule maintenance, otherwise they all lose suction / die. If you insist on buying a new vacuum, you can find a Dyson for $199-299 on Amazon on sale, sometimes TJ maxx / marshall have them for $250-350. There's also special edition at target / sam's club / costco for under $400. Don't pay full retail.

You can     take apart 2 and 2a, there's 3 snap points, you can just yank it out and spray water.

Don't get intimidated by it, it is not brain surgery, if you can take apart a food processor / juicer, you can take apart and wash the Dyson.
