And apparently the groomer there breeds and shows corgis!! so we were very happy to meet her and she was happy to meet Pooka, whom she called Peanut, because she apparently looks just like him! ("Peanut" is also the common name for the runt of the litter)

I told her, we of course think Pooka is the prettiest (I never can see what's so special about the corgis you see at shows, none are as pretty as Pooka), but asked what she thought. I just never knew what's a fault and what a show corgi is supposed to look like! She said she doesn't have the real dark eyeliner, which is a small fault, and that her back end is all wrong, her back legs turn out a bit and her tail is too long. She is very small for her age and too skinny (she's such a picky eater!) She said she looks like the kind of corgi that comes from a breeder who breeds dogs for working on the farm. Real stocky and no need for super propriety.

drat! I forgot to ask if the little nibble she has out of the top of her right ear is a fault (she came like that, so I don't know if she was born that way or one of her littermates nom nom'd her ear when they were real young) Does anyone know?

She gave us the normal advice about handling their paws and teeth (a notorious problem with corgis) and to get a furminator, but also mentioned not to do real hard exercise (as in agility training stunts) or let her jump off the couch until she is 18 MONTHS because she is still big time developing. We will probably get her some stairs for descending as she only learned to get on the couch last week and so... that leads to jumping off the couch.

I was really happy to get to talk to someone who knew about showing corgis. I never wanted to do showing (though I like the idea of agility) but if she was a champion dog, I didn't want the world to miss out! Now I can have no regrets when I get her spade ^_^

She also let us know that there is dog show here in San Antonio next week where she'll be showing some corgis and maybe we'll stop by!!

It was the one at San Pedro, just outside 410. I think her name was Deena?

Well... I was actually VERY picky about how she looked, just not worried about showing her ^_^. I was mostly worried about face/ears, just that she LOOKED like a corgi should. I had always looked for "Champion bloodlines" cuz if they're a champion, they should look right. But after nearly a year, it just hadn't worked out and I just happened to come across an add in the local newspaper, at the right time. The breeder sent me pictures of the mom and dad and they looked just like I wanted. I did wish her tail was shorter from the very beginning (but I can't imagine docking them more at 6 or 8 weeks!) but now its really cute that she can actually wag it =).

Besides, perfect looks don't matter in agility! And that's the only thing I'd be really interested in.

Thanks for sating my curiosity on her ear!

Good you had the ability to learn from someone that has a tad more knowledge. I think you should go to the show and see what show dogs do look like. Mind you this in no way will change how much you love your little pal but will show you a big difference in the many corgis you will meet down the road. Yes the nibbled ear would not bode well for her in the ring, nor would the tail that is too long. I think most people that get their first corgi are just so excited and get the first one they find. For many this works out just fine. My first was of dreadful breeding but I must say just a grand pal. She taught me well and made me choose to learn more and more about the breed. I just bet you will do the same. Good luck!
