I am at my wits end with Nutmeg. She is a ferocious chewer. I gave her one of these...http://www.nylabone.com/products/non-edible/flexible-chews/chicken-flavor-bone68648.htm.

She chewed on it for about 2 days until I saw chunks of it in her area. She is confined to my kitchen when I'm not home. I thought...ok, so she chewed a few chunks off. I took it away. This morning at 4:00 am, I heard her screaming. I ran to the kitchen to find her trying to poop. She has been wonderful about doing her thing outside, so I was very concerned, not to mention she was yelping out of control. I caught her and checked her bottom to find chunks of the nylabone in her butt. I had to pull it out, and also some hair like substance. Once I got it out, she got quiet. I let her outside, and she did the whole thing again! She was running throughout the backyard crying and yelping. Im sure the neighbors heard. I was heartbroken! I chased her down and pulled another few chunks out. (ok, this is really gross!) She was shaking and licking my feet. I took her back in, gave her a warm bath, and she seemed better. I went back to bed, got a few minutes more of sleep. I fed her normally at lunch. I skipped her morning feeding just in case. She pooped normal at noon, and then again tonight. She will chew the stuffing out of every toy I give her. She loves the squeeky toys. I am so paranoid now. What kind of chew toy/treat can I give her that will last more than 5 minutes?

Lance also is a very destructive chewer when it comes to toys, so we havent been able to give him stuffed toys, squeaky toys or any of the fun toys cause I am just too afraid he will eat them all. Just a couple of months ago I thought I would try giving him a giraffe toy made out of a tennis ball with ropes for arm and legs and then had string on it, he ate the strings, a big chunck within like 5 minutes! grrrr, I was hoping that he had grown out of that mode since he is now 3 but no! The only toys lance really has are not chew toys, they are kongs, busy buddy or fetch toys which means a rubber ball or two or ten......lol from www.planetdog.co
m. Thank goodness he likes to play fetch. Other toys that are meant for fetching he likes to chew on too!!!

I soooooo want to try to get him some bully sticks but are so afraid to because my vet advised us to stay away from bones, since he is a destructive chewer. The other reason I am afraid to try them is because since we stopped giving him bones of any type when he was a pup we never really were able to teach him how to appropriately act with them, meaning not gettting aggressive over them. : ( We wouldnt have had this problem if he was allowed to have them at a younger age and teach him how to act with them. *big sigh* I feel for you, it definately is a challenge to find things. Ive also had good luck with the waggle from busy buddy, its purple and you put treats at each end of it. Again, most of the toys lance has is treat related that he doesnt destroy cause hes to busy trying to get the good treats out of it. I have had great success with toys from www.planetdog.com I only get the toys that are rated 5 out of 5 chompers! Good Luck. : )

I had a horrible experience with nylabones just this past weekend. I gave my Maggie the same exact nylabone and it caused her to throw up. In the course of 2 hours she threw up 8 times. In all the piles I had to clean I saw the same thing......parts of nylabone. I had given her the nylabone earlier in the day and after 5 minutes she had devoured more than half of it . I have thrown out everything but kong toys. I have decided to go with nothing but rubber type toys like the kongs. I feel for you and I am sorry your baby had that experience.

Your poor baby! I am so sorry that happened to her!

I have the same chewing problem with my mini Aussie. He kills toys in a matter of minutes. And he doesn't just rip them up, he eats them. We have had great success with two things. The first is rawhide bones. I was nervous to do this at first as I'd heard bad things about giving dogs rawhides, but I talked about it with my vet and decided it was either that or say goodbye to every piece of furniture I owned. I just buy him the very large rawhides, like the size that you would give to a shepherd or a lab, and monitor how much he ingests each day. After he's had so much, I take it away for the day.

The second thing that has been great for us is the Nylabone Dental Dino. There is a white one and a blue one. We haven't tried the blue one, but the white one (seemed the harder of the two) has been great. He does still seem to eat it, but because it is so hard, it just come off in little, litttle pieces. We've had it since December and it is only half gone. He chew on it for hours a night, and you can not tell a noticable size difference from night to night so I know he is not eating enough at one time to hurt him.

Those are the only, two things that have worked for us. He does love ice, but eat it in a matter of seconds. Kongs worked until a couple of months ago, but he has now learned how to shred those and eat them as well. Who ever would have guessed a 25 lb dog could be such a strong chewer? Good luck and I'll be interested to see if anyone else has some good suggestions!
