If you would like to help, you can donate supplies, dog toys, food, blankets and beds to Animal Control headquarters, which is located west of Winter Haven and near the county's North Central Landfill at 7115 De Castro Road.

A lot of times the people that do things like this think they are helping the animals. Last year in San Antonio there was a cat-hoarder who got all the animals confiscated (my rescue group took some in) and the hoarder was a vet tech. A vet tech! The people that do things like this don't understand that they are hurting the animals a lot of the time. Its hard to not hate these people but a lot of the time they simply just don't know what they're doing :/

I hope all the dogs get placed in loving forever homes

I work for a municipality that offers animal control. We have a phenominal animal control officer that works so hard. We are seeing an increasing number of surrendered animals. We have placed a number of labs into rescue, had great luck placing some into loving homes, and placed a great deal of the smaller breeds in a no kill shelter within the county....but it is an incredible challange. I can say with complete confidence that every animal is given a chance, is fed, given shelter, and in many cases get medications. It is a hard job physically, mentally and emotionally. The most incredible thing is the astounding number of cats that come into the shelter....it is unreal.

@ Sam- Oh I am not casting stones and there is always more to the story than the news media says, just seems they were way over there head and needed to do something before all this happened to them & the poor dogs.

Who doesn't have flaws right? Like Beth said, it is a mental illness, No sane person would live in a 3000 sqft home with 261 dogs, this is where they live, couple of acres in the middle of no where polk city Florida.

View Larger Map Here's the rescue website, it does say they have NO physical shelter, so the couple used their home as one, other places may have zoning issues, but not in farm land Polk city, they also have listed 106 dogs on petfinder.com. Lets just say they surely have the heart for rescue, but lets not cast the first stone so quickly without obtaining all the facts first.

I believe animal hoarding is beginning to be recognized as a form of mental illness.

People start out meaning well, and they just can't turn away an animal in need, and end up with far more than they could ever care for.
