I spent one of the worst 30 minutes of my life last night. Mark lets the dogs out at 8:30 before he comes up to bed. They go out, the cats get treats and then the dogs come in and get treats. He comes in screaming at me that I left the gate unlatched...Max was gone. He heads out the back way and I slide into my slip-ons and head out the front door. I'm in my jammies with just my light weight robe on. He goes down our street, I head around the corner towards the school and all the way down that street. I head back towards the house and I see Mark in the truck, he goes the other way, I head down our street again, go thru the path between 2 buildings out onto a main drag. Head one way and then down the street behind our house yelling for Max all the way. I was trying to cover the area I know he is familar with from taking walks. I was getting so sick to my stomach. I'm almost back down to the corner to turn towards home and Mark comes by with the truck. He found Max in the front yard of the house on the corner...on the busy cross street. 30 minutes we are out there looking for him...I was frozen and sick.
I told him I did not open the gate. When I brought the trash barrel in on Monday I lifted it over the gate, didn't open it. And that was Monday...this was Wednesday and he just got out. So...someone had to have opened the gate and it didn't latch. Mark thinks maybe it's the people behind us. They have 3 little boys and I am always finding balls in the backyard. I've already thrown a couple back over the fence so far this spring but I'm not out in the yard every day like I am in the warm weather. He thinks the father may be coming over to get the balls. Mark checked to see if we had a padlock he could put on the gate but nothing that will fit. He will bring one home today.
And mind you, Katie was out there with Max. She does not leave the yard, not even to follow him. Thank goodness we weren't looking for both dogs. I don't think he would run far from the neighborhood but he has no street smarts when it comes to traffic.
Make sure your dogs ALWAYS have their tags on. I know a lot of people don't leave a collar on unless they are actually walking the dog but that's dangerous. Mark sure your dogs have name tags with your phone number. Get your dogs chipped....I use Home Again and both dogs have the tag for the chip and both are registered with Home Again and with the AKC recovery program. So please...make sure they have everything necessary to make sure they can be returned to you if they ever get loose.

We can see the gate from the deck and we both look to see if it's open when we let the dogs out...every time Max has gotten out the gate looks closed but the latch isn't engaged. Max is a stinker, he checks the gate to see if he can push it open, I've watched him test it.
But Katie never leaves the yard, I would think she would follow her uncle Max but she doesn't. She may be dumb as a box of rocks...my apologies to the rest of the corgis....but she stays put.
I'm still paranoid too! I can see the gate from the sliding glass door and every time I let the dogs out I glance at the gate to make sure it's closed. If our yard guy is working I don't let them out at all!
My husband put a padlock on the gate as soon as he got home from work yesterday. I'm still paranoid even tho I know now it can't be opened, I'm sure I will get over that but the fear is still fresh in my mind.
How wonderful that you found him in 30 minutes. I, too, had a dog that escaped... She ended up going to the nearest convenience store and the clerk called the police who came to pick up my dog in a police car. Luckily I had tags with phone numbers on, so the police called me right away. Tags and micro chips, but there is always the worry about dogs in traffic.
Glad your guy is now safe at home.
Thank goodness you found him! All three of mine got out once when the meter reader left the gate open (grrr!). I was frantic, the neighbors must have thought I was a crazy lady. Thank goodness they turned right and not left (towards the highway). My son found them up in a cul-de-sac.
They wear their tags all the time and also have Home Again chips.
Glad to hear that both of you keep their tags on. Too many people say "oh, my yard is fenced"...well so is mine but there is always a gate or some even like to dig.
Jane..chipping is a good idea. The shot isn't that expensive and it's only $17/year for the registration at Home Again...I just got the reminder for Max's due in May. No charge to be listed with the AKC program, they use the Home Again number.
This must be the week for mishaps but mine isn't a run away...Mine always have an ID and their rabies tag on. I should have mine chipped though! Glad all turned out well and I know the horror felt when something is wrong!
Glad you found MAX unhurt, Linda. I don't take Abbey's collar and tag off, I feel much better with them on. Instead of putting my home phone # on her tag, I had the vet's phone number put on it. I take Abbey out with a leash, but my husband takes her out without it. Our neighbors dogs frequent our yard, and Abbey will wander off with them if I do not put her leash on. She has wandered off a couple of times, and it is fearful and frustrating until you catch up with them and get them back home.
