No, there are just the 2x4's constructed from hard wood and the wood shavings sit on top of concrete. the concrete has a drain so we can hose the area before it gets smelly. We had a cover made to close for rain but we rarely bother with it as we don't have too much rain in S CA. We periodically remove all the wood shavings and hose the area well and replace fresh wood shavings as soon as the concrete is sun dried. We've never had more than 2 Corgis using the area.
We got a box from Home depot and many bags of the bedding from petsmart for our girls. I have a few more questions regarding the maintenance of the box and littler.
1. Do you have anything on the bottom of the litter box? Ours just has four sides and we're just going to place it on top of some tarp that was placed underneath the rubber mulch we originally had in our back yard.
2. What do you do when the litter gets wet from urine and rain?
3. Does it get smelly?
I'm pretty sure I'll have hundreds more questions once we have everything set up but so far these were the only questions that came to our minds when we were buying the supplies.
haha. looks like it was made to be. i'm sure they carry it, but you can call them before you go to be sure. otherwise, you can ask them to order it for you. good luck. maybe they have the 2x4s, too. otherwise, any lumber yard could cut them to size for you. it works like a charm.
Thanks so much for your help. I just received a coupon in the mail for $20 off a $75 purchase at petsmart. I guess I'll go on a shopping spree for bedding today! Wish me luck. I hope they carry it at the petsmart by my house.
PS
While I was at it I figured I'd measure the "litter box" for you. OH NO. The video started up again and Lucy's listening to "great girl, Lucy...the best girl in America..." more treats for lucy and I have to hear my voice yet again... The measurements are approximately 40x60 inches. Good luck. It's so easy once you get started. You'll want to thank all the Corgi breeders of CA. If you can add a doggy door and enclose that area, you'll have it totally made in the shade! haha.
Let me know how it goes. It's sooo easy
haha. i'm responding to your email and my video popped up with me speaking "great girl, Lucy! i love you Lucy!" and yada yada. Lucy got so happy. When Doug (& gromit) put music to one of my silly videos, Lucy went crazy. She kept hearing me say, "go make peepee, lucy." ok. so i had to stop and give her a treat.
Re sawdust: Initially, back 30 yrs ago when our Corgi breeders taught us about 2x4's, jack had to go with a 35 gallon bag or two to the mill near us to collect sawdust from the floor. it was a dusty, nasty job and probably not in the best interest of jack or our corgis. but what did we know back then? nothing! now, the best place we've found is petsmart, where we buy (seemingly) clean wood shavings w/o all the mess. i'll take the measurements of the 2x4 if you're interested. it's the perfect size for 2 adult corgis to use. Presently, we just have Lucy. But, we're thinking about adding a puppy soon. I'll keep you posted. btw, the wood shavings are made by Premier Pet Natural Kiln dried pine bedding, dust free.
Hi Wendy. My husband and I are interested in setting up a box with sawdust for the girls similar to the one you have in your videos. I just wanted to ask you where you get your sawdust from. Also, are there certain types of sawdust we should stay away from? Do you have any pointers for us? Thanks!
@Anneke- I did a daytime video but have having trouble downloading it. It's a very simple thing to do, especially if the breeder starts their puppies on sawdust. I'll keep trying so you can see it.
