Certifect..Has Anyone Heard Of This?

It's some kind of flea and tick stuff.  I just heard from a good friend that she used it on her dockie and the pup is now in the hospital.  It's a full grown dog, right dosage was used.  Dog started staggering, ice cold, low respiration...not good at all.  I researched it because I have never heard of it and the many many of the reviews were bad.  A number of dogs have died from it.  One review I read was from a vet.

Anyone have any experience with it?

Thank-goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We also live in an area that seldom has fleas (the summer has to be just right).

I hate any chemicals and seldom use them for anything when there's alternatives to many things.

Beth...as of late last night Lady was home and like nothing had happened.  She had never used it before.  Her SIL got it from her vet to replace the regular Frontline that my friend had used on the SIL's dogs while she was taking care of them for several weeks.

I don't use flea treatment on a regular basis during the summer months unless we have an infestation like we did this year.  That is something that happens only every few years and we had the perfect weather for the flea explosion this summer.  I don't like using chemicals on my guys especially the cats...they are a lot more sensitive to chemicals than dogs are.

So scary!  I so agree with your last comment;  for a very long time I would only put on flea and tick stuff during the day or early evening, just in case.  Finally I decided it's unlikely they'll react after all these years and give it at night.

Even with myself, I don't like to try a new med if no one is around, if at all possible.  One never knows.  If one in a thousand reacts, that could be you!

Hope the poor thing is ok.  :-(

Jane...she is going to be ok.  Last I talked to my friend she was suppose to be able to pick her up at 4.  I haven't heard anything from her since.  I imagine she is just hugging on that poor little girl.  I'm sure she feels extremely guilty.  She made the comment to never try a new med at night time when the vet is closed.  She believes if she had used it and then gone to bed she would have lost her dog.

Melissa...thank you for your comment.  I passed it on to my friend.  Thankfully her dog is going to be ok.  Her vet called a specialist vet and he had an antidote.  They gave Lady an IV to counteract the receptors, my friend was able to bring her home a short time ago.

I knew if I came here and asked someone would have information on it.  This is such a great source of information not only on corgis but also for all things dog related.  Heck, even cat related.

Its a brand new product on the market containing Amitraz which is commonly found in tick collars and also used in a dip for scabies. Since the other portion of the medication is just Frontline Plus I'm guessing its the amitraz that's causing the issue. Its a "vet only" product so getting it from other (often illegal) sources such as online pharmacies may also affect the reaction to the medication since those products are generally expired or formulated differently yet packaged exactly the same. Merial is a company with a really good reputation so any reactions should be reported immediately to Merial by your vet and if the product was bought through a vet hospital they will often pay for the vet bills and they take these reports to heart. All of the guarantee goes out the window however if you get the medications from other sources.
