It is great to have such highly qualified people available to us!  It makes me feel a little comforted to know that people like you are willing to help...even if just to answer a question.  Thank you!!
No problem Teresa! Hope I can help people in some way.
Why does my Bootsie lick so much and so furiously?
Also he is going to the vet today for a checkup, I want to make sure he gets a thorough check how about a list for me, I would appreciate it sooooo much.

Hi Nicloa

Sorry to hear about Bootsie!

Heres a few thing to check your self

Check his coat is it bright, shiny free from dirt flakes and smell?

Where is he licking and when is he licking?  Is there a pattern to it?  Is it morning/night before/after feeding walks or being outside or is it when you leave him at home?

Is it only licking? Is it accompanied by scratching then licking and more scratching?

Is he up to date with his flea and worming dosage? External parasites can in some dogs cause sever irritation and discomfort.

The vet will prpobably ask you all the same questions but its good to have the answers before hand.

Licking is the dogs natural mechanisim of cleaning.  It is both instinctual and nautral.

Unfortunately the lovely shampoos and conditioners we use strip the natural oils from the skin leaving a normally naturally protected skin susceptible to bacterial or fungal infections.  These can be treated using medicated creams or shampoos perscribed by you vet.

Also the house mite and dust mite and pollen can cause skin irritation. If it is as simple as these tiny culpurets frequent hoowering and dustung will alleviate the symptoms.  As for the bedding put the dogs bed into a large black bag and double it over and put it in the freezer for 24hrs this kills all the eggs that the mite lays.  Hoover it and wash as normal in a hight heat wash.  This must be done monthly!!

In some instances it can be a behavioural problem anxiety, stress, depression, separation anxiety or boredom all through behavioural modification techniques can be changed.  Time and patience required!!

In my experience food is one of the biggest causes of skin irritation.  Usually due to food having too high a protein concentration.  Protein metabolites secreted through the sebaceous glands in the skin can cause irritation. Also,  Is your dog carrying any excess weight?  Activity levels need to be  a reflection of the quality and quantity of the food given to you dog.

If you Bootsie is licking a particular area only it could be a sign of pain.  The vet will be in a position to diagnose this.  It may be unrelated to the area Bootsie is licking also.

Let me know how Bootsie gets on and any other advice I can help you with

Thank you so much, how kind of you to help. Bootsie is licking us, furiously and like he can't get enough. It seems he does it cos he LOVES us so much but their must be some psychology behind it.
i actually have a question. today while clipping teddys nails i noticed a pink bump like right next to his "knuckle" on his paw. it has no hair on it and its about the size of a pea. i pushed on it and it didnt hurt him but it still makes me wonder. he is acting fine, playful, eating/drinking and his poop is normal.  do u have an idea of what it could be?

Hi Rebecca.

When touching the "bump" was it hard or soft and does it move freely if you try to move it?

I could be an Interdigital cyst usuall nothing to worry about.  Your vet can asparate a sample and have it checked.

Inter-digital cysts aren't usually cancerous but more of an allergy related problem -often contain Staphylococci bacteria. A bit like hot spots, except in the shape of cysts in between the toes.

It could also be a lymphoma.  These form in the fat layer of the skin.  Non cancerous but can grow quite large and givin the area would eventually become uncomfortable.

I would not rush to the vet keep your usual routine and monitor the lump colour, size and the condition of the dogs paw - pain, heat, swelling or discharge, for a couple of weeks.  Any changes, go to the vet to further investigate it.

Hope this helps even if you not sure upload a picture to my profile it may help

Keep me updated

thank you so much for the reply. when i touch it is squishy and flattens when i try to move it. in the middle i have noticed a very faint gray color spot. i will send u a photo and see what u think, i really hope its nothing to worry about
here are the pics. the one photo it looks bright red because i was pushing on it

Rebecca thank you for the pictures.

It almost looks like a thorn or something pricked him.  Check it again in the morning after the nights rest and see if it is any different to these pictures.  See if you can see any thing that may be lodged in there.

The skin looks completely intact but inflamed.  Could he have been bitten or stung?

A really simple thing to do is to bathe the paw in warm salty water.  It can draw out what may be in it.  This is only tempory and if after 3-4 days with no clearance you should seek veterinary advice.

If it gets any bigger or changes colour please see you veterinarian.

All the advise as before still stands also.

Keep me posted on how teddy is doing.
