Potty training
Ellie is almost a year old now and is well house trained as long as we remember to take her out on a schedule. My problem is, I have never been able to get her to give me any clue when she needs to go out. We tried the bell on the door thing last winter, every time we took her out we rang the bell and said "outside", but she just ignored it and never did use it. Even now, when I ask her if she needs to go "outside", she just gives me a blank look and no body language whatsoever. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I still think a bell is a good idea you just have to get her to know what it means (although Quin will wine if I ignore her ringing the bell) Do you do clicker training at all? It is great the dog knows right away that what you wanted and what they just did is the right thing. check it out on youtube kikopup is a wonderful one. What I did was I first taught her to TOUCH something with her nose it is very easy to teach this, once she was touching on command I had her touch the bell and then we progressed to touching the bell and the treat was going outside. It will come or she will find something to let you know, maybe you take her out before it is urgent and so she just never has to tell you:)

Maybe I should try the bell again now that she is a little older. When we tried last time, I would also help her nose the bell when we went out, but it didn't sink in. I also have thought of the possibility that I take her out before it is urgent, but when she gives me no clues, I don't want to wait until it's too late. It's kind of a Catch 22 situation. Thanks for the feedback and I will try the bell again.

I started using the bell again yesterday and so far she has used it a few times--she just needs to get a little more aggressive with it so I can hear it better. I have one on the kitchen door to the outside and one on the bedroom door where I am on the computer a lot--but she is so gentle with it, I almost miss it.

You need a better bell. I have one that is a brass bell and I hear it even if she just nudges it, but I left it at someones house when we stayed for a weekend and I got one from a craft store, not the same I couldn't hear it at all I was so glade when I got the old one back.

Emmy is 12 weeks old and we've done the bell thing since day 1 but it isn't sticking either. Even if she rings the bell, when i go to put the leash on her she tries to run away from the door, but as soon as I get her to the grass, she pees on command. I can't figure out if she just doesn't know if she has to go, if she doesn't want to go, or just that it's too hot outside so she wants to stay inside as long as she can. She doesn't really have accidents or anything.
Sometimes in the morning if I say ring the bell she will ring ring ring it until I get her outside.

At 12 weeks Emmy is not really potty trained. They dont really have full control until after 5 or 6 months in my opinion and some people say 1 to 2 years, but keep up the good work cause all the training will pay off when she is old enough. Just don't think something is wrong if all of a sudden she starts piddleing on the floor cause it will be awhile before she is reliable.

Franklin is the same way. He is 2 1/2 now and hasn't had an accident in 2 years or more but he also won't ever tell me when he has to go. I put in a dog door and he doesn't use it. He goes potty on command but the problem with this is that he doesn't seem to realize he can go without me telling him too! In 2 1/2 years he has never once alerted me that he had to go potty, even one time he had an upset tummy in the middle of the night and I woke up to him trembling beside me. Never once did he push me or make a peep, or even make a mess in the house. He just waited until I woke up on my own and saw he was feeling horribly sick. Wish I knew how to teach him to let himself out the dog door and go potty! He'll use the dog door to go in and now but never ever will he go out and pee or poop without me telling him to.

We got lucky with our youngest corgi who violently hurls himself into the door and shakes the entire house when he has to go! :)

Trembling beside you :( Poor Franklin. But that is great that he doesn't have accidents. Emmy barks at me. Yesterday I was eating dinner on the couch, so I couldn't tell if she was barking to get on the couch, to get to my food, or to go out... It was number 3... She went on the carpet and then came back to me and started barking until I got of the couch and then walked me to her accident spot to show me what she did and patiently waited for me to clean it up. I know she's learning and I'm learning too.

We plan on putting in a doggie door too, but she is so used to us going out with her that I fear she won't use it. Is Franklin quiet most of the time? Ellie rarely barks and I have never heard her yipe even though she has gotten her toes step on by accident and even when I cut her toenail too close once, it made her bleed and I felt sooo bad, but she never said a peep. (Sorry this was meant for Meliissa and Franklin, but I've replied to her comment twice and it keeps going to you--go figure?)

Hopefully, when we are gone to work and she is alone for 8 hours she will get the hang of going out by herself--last winter I came home every day at noon to potty her. Is Franklin always quiet? Ellie rarely barks and I have never heard her yipe even though she has gotten her toes stepped on by accident. Once I cut one of her toenails to close and made it bleed (I felt sooo bad), but she never made a sound.
