We went to a park this weekend that had a big lake and met with some other corgis there. One of the corgis loved jumping in the lake and swimming around. He was awesome! Ginny definitely seemed interested and got in and waded around in the shallow area. I didn't let her go out very far, but I'd like to try to teach her to swim. I bought her a life vest afterwards and we might try going to the reservoir to swim in a few weeks.

Does anyone have any tips for teaching a corgi how to swim? Anything I need to be prepared for?

Oh my are you kidding... mine LOVED water. My mom actually bought a kiddie plastic pool (small) and would fill it up with water and let Andy jump around in it... he would lie down with his head out of the water and just soak up rays. Max loved to go into the lake-- he would't go so far that his legs would not touch the bottom-- just enough to where he's IN the water, but not quite swimming. Haven't put Blaze in water yet-- not even for a bath... that day is soon approaching...
Charlie is more of a wader than a swimmer but he will swim. He isn't that good, so I got him a life jacket to give us both a little more confidence. It has a handle on the back so its really convenient if I need to just grab him up. He doesnt mind wearing it, although he probably prefers to run around without it.
epi is a water clown and will take her fetch toys and place them in the water as to have an excuse to jump in the lake. I would caution against pool or spa swimming as one dog is about the same as 4-6 people jumping in when it comes to chemical balances, and need i say anything about the hair in the filter. lol Epi knows the word lake and go swimming. Go outside gets a run to the door, go play gets a run to the drawer with the toys, go swimming and she runs to the closet with the towels. Paradoxically she is a bit of a fraidy dog when it comes to baths? hmmmmm
that's really cute... sounds like fun
Zed hates the water or being wet. He's shown no interest in swimming at all. Will be going to the lake with him a bit more this summer so we'll see if that changes.
I haven't had the chance to take my corgis to a body of water like that, but my little girl is a big fan of the water. She comes running when I turn the bath water on and if given the chance, she'll jump in.
Skittles doesn't like the ocean...the big waves rushing at her little body freak her out. I haven't gotten her to a still body of water, though, so I wonder if her reaction would be any different. I want to teach her to at least tolerate the water, though, so thanks for asking the question for me!
I've been putting Ginny's little life vest on her here at home for 10-15 minutes at a time to get her used to it. So I went to go put dinner together tonight and I come back out to the family room and she has CHEWED THROUGH one of the straps! In only about 5 minutes... Grrrrrr.... So now the life preserver is pretty much shot. So word to the wise, if you want to let them wear the life preserver, you better watch them pretty closely when they're wearing it!!

Also, Ginny is getting "the big snip-snip" on Friday. I'm going to ask the vet to give her the giardia and lepto vaccines while she's there so I don't have to worry about her getting sick if she's swimming in the reservoir (that's about all we have out here for her to swim in, and I'm sure they're brimming with bacteria).
I have a water LOVER. Junebug's first encounter involved rushing into a drainage ditch that was fast-moving and full. She was surprised, scared, but in a moment, she paddled her way back to the bank (to my GREAT relief, I was about to jump in after her!). When she hit land, she tucked-tail, and ran back to the house! Swimming career over, I thought. However, when she discovered a nasty water hole on a walk, she was hooked. It must have been the stink that won her over :p !! Well, now pretty much any body of water is irrisitable. She's been in streams, lakes, ponds, and a bay, though no ocean beaches yet. She'll fetch in water, or just swim around and around, sometimes biting at the water and splashing with great delight! I've never felt the need to get a lifejacket, as I always supervise her, and she is a capable swimmer. Watching her swim is one of my favorite things to do!
Tucker LOVES to swim. Our dog park had a small swimming pond for dogs. On one end it had sort of a boat ramp for dogs to wade into the water. I wore water proof sandals, waded in Tucker, and picked him up and gently set him into water that was over his head but still shallow. At first he didn't like it, but he soon figured out that he could swim. Then I started tossing his tennis ball out a little further. Eventually he became an avid swimmer, swimming just as far out as the Labs, only a little slower. He looked like a little beaver. Everyone who sees this is amazed, but it reminds me of what they say in the intro to "Little People, Big World" on TLC "We can do everything other people can do, just in a different way."

The other thing he does with water is to drop his Kong ball into a water bucket and then stick his head under the water to get it. He'll do this over and over when it's hot outside. Because of the hole, the Kong sinks, and he keeps his eyes open while he's fishing it out. I think he'd scuba dive if he could!

My corgi, Penni LOVES to swim! She hogs the raft, though! And yes there is hair in the pool filter, we don't use chlorine in our pool, (something called "soft swim") . She has been swimming for 2 years and she is quite good.
She tried to climb up the ladder today to get in the pool, but we are replacing the liner, so maybe next weekend!
I think I will get her a life preserver, too!
that's a great pic! She looks so happy!
