Chompers is occasionally acting strangely....paranoid & shaky.

Hi everyone! Chompers is all of a sudden acting paranoid & shaky. Out of the blue, she'll become clingy, run around frantically and shake her head as if she hears and see's something that no one else can.

I've thouroughly cleansed her ears of wax and also made sure she didn't have ear mites, and she doesn't have any stomach issues. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I was just thowing the ball for her and all of a sudden, instead of picking up the ball and bringing it to me, she started looking up at the walls as if there was something in the ceiling corners and then she ran to her little "safe place" up against the wall near our foyer table. This is a new "safe place" she's designated ever since she started acting a bit paranoid within the last week.

Any experience or feedback with this type of behavior is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How old is she and is she spayed? It would not be unusual for a female coming in to her first season to exhibit some very odd behaviors.
Hi Sam,

Chompers will be 4 yrs old in September and she's been fixed since she was 6 months old. Thanks for taking the time!
Hi Debbie,

That makes sense. I have been pretty stressed with work the last 2 weeks trying to hit deadlines, and to add to that, I threw out my back and I've been walking hunched over...alot better this week.

She's due for a physical, so I'll bring her in just to be safe.

Thank you!
Maria
Another experience I have had is if you have smoke alarms or another device that may be emitting a constant sound she is not used to. This has put my guys in quite a state in the past. Have you recently added any electronics that perhaps is making a noise you can not hear? Do you live in an apartment and perhaps have new neighbors upstairs? Is it possible that something is reflecting on the ceiling at that time? Do keep us posted. Sounds like this is going to be quite a mystery for you to solve.
I plan on taking Chompers to the vet tomorrow to check her ears. I do believe she may have an inner ear problem and there have also been a few changes and stress around the house lately that may also be triggering her anxiety.

I blew out my back last week so I've been walking around with a cane and my husband just got a big motorcycle with a lot of chrome that sits in the garage and I think she may be a little freaked out by it. She used to go in the garage and sleep in one of the dog beds half way through the night, but she hasn't been doing that lately.

Thanks ya'll for the great feedback. I really appreciate it.
I just joined this site, and posted something a few minutes ago. I don't want to rehash it over again, but my dog is acting very weird as well. He also has a new "safe place", and I'm waiting for some help as well.

Hi Luanne,

After doing an ear mite cleanse and throuroughly having her ears cleaned, Chompers was still acting strangely........acting paranoid, clingy, looking around frantically as if she could hear or see something no one else could. I took her to the vet and he gave her medication (clindamycin) just in case she had an inner right ear infection and also an antihistimine because her ears were red and a little swollen.

We walk 3 times a day and she loves to run in the grass and roll around. I noticed after her walks that her ears would look pretty red...even after an hour. Even though I groom my dogs and baby wipe them everyday before they go to bed, I can't eliminate all of the pollen. I believe it's the pollen that's causing her ears to be irritated. I give her an antihistamine pill when I notice her ears are really red and it helps.

I also noticed that she seems to be happier when I'm working from my laptop downstairs instead of working in my office upstairs. I believe her problem is she is a little depressed because my husband travels sporadically for up to 3 weeks at a time and she really craves our attention combined with the fact that she has allergies to pollen.

Consider having your vet check for ear problems, or stomach upset. Changes in your household could also be causing anxiety. Hope your dog feels better.
I have had his ears checked, and he uses Opti Otic to clean them . A baby wipe is a wonderful idea, and I have never heard that. I will get then tomorrow! Thank you so much. What type of antihistamine do you give her? I have noticed Fred shaking his head after his bath this last week, and think he may have had some water in his ear. Noises also bother him a lot. My son getting his drivers license may have caused some depression as well. My husband keeps laughing at me, and thinks I'm going a bit overboard with this. Believe me, I have tried moving my laptop, and taking Fred everywhere I can with me.
Thanks for caring so much,
LuAnne
