My little guy is 2 years old. Right now we are pretty regularly getting a 1 hour/3 mile walk daily. I can definitely tell if I miss a few days, since he starts being a brat and being super bossy to the other household dogs. :P

I am wondering if I should step up the length or frequency of our walks. I want him happy and tired, but not overtaxed! What kind of walking schedule makes your dogs the happiest?

Hey thanks for the input everybody!

My little guy seems tireless for our first mile. Mile 2, for some reason he slows down and doesn't seem to want to walk at my pace. He's not trying to sniff or pee, just being lazy or something. But he can't really be all that worn out, since on the last third home he picks up the pace again. This happens regardless of what route we take... I've been worried about overtaxing him because of that slow mid-walk segment.

I would prefer he kept up the nice quick pace the whole time instead of lagging in the middle. Any thoughts? He's a trim 28 lbs and in good health.

Hi Meg, what was the temperature + humidity?, what color was his tongue and how long was it hanging out? How long did it take you two to reach the mid point and to finish the walk? Did you take water break in between?

I never walk him when it's hot... we go in the evening just before dark, I'm not sure of the temp but it's cool. 65-70 degrees I would guess. Tongue stays nice and pink, not red, hanging out about mid way. It's not humid.

I thought we were taking an hour, but in timing it, it's closer to 45 mins. So it takes about 15 mins for him to decide he wants to slow down, he spends 10-15 mins being slow, and then he perks up again for the rest. We have not stopped for water breaks before since it's only 3 miles and it's evening, but maybe that would help him.

Haha, well 5.5 months is a lil' guy still! Their brains get pretty tired pretty quick at that age. He might do better on frequent, shorter walks. I think my 2 year old needs water breaks or is giving me some corgi 'tude!
I realized I must sound like a monster! He wasn't interested in water breaks in the past, which is why we haven't stopped for them lately. But I will start doing it again and see if he wants any water.
Nah... that's where a helpful community comes in handy :) If I was in your situation, I would take water breaks every 10-15 mins. If Indy refuse water, then you can pick up the pace till the next break.
Overtax a corgi???? Seems that they are the happiest when they walk alot. Watch some of the video that shows them hearding, they really dont slow down doing that.
We do herding lessons. He loves it and doesn't slow down for those unless his little brain gets tired!
I wish you could say you couldn't over-tax Sidney, but I get happy if my baby doesn't have to take a break on a walk. He started having troubles on a walk in the summer before we discovered his hip dysplasia, and now despite a very successful surgery, he still has arthritis (only 4 years old!) and tires out on walks. But he's a trooper!

An exciting update in the world of me walking my dog! Ha ha. :)

He started lagging on the first mile/15mins instead of the 2nd, so I can only assume he read the thread here and decided to spite me. Water breaks were refused. Go figure.

Time of day seems to make some difference -- walking at 7:30 AM instead of 7:00 PM, there was no lagging. We did our usual 3 miles and he wanted to frolic around the back yard when we got back. This is distressing news since I'm not much of a morning person... oh, dog, what are you doing to me?!

I walk my Quin early in the morning (in Arizona if it is 80 degrees at 6:30 we are happy)  when we first start out she wants to sniff everything (we live in the middle of the desert though) I sometimes have to pull her, she will plant all four feet and sit back so there are drag marks if she does it suddenly. But after about the first mile she realizes we are walking  or there isn't anything interesting to sniff any more but after we get home she sleeps most of the day.  she would walk again in the evening but it is just too hot right now even after dark, when it cools off we will start to walk in the evening also just cause I need it ha ha.

I work 10 hour days, so I leave at 6AM and come home at 6PM. I'm pretty much a single parent (no children, talking about the Corgis here) with my two corgis.

Foxy, the female, was pregnant and had her puppies so I couldn't walk them for 4 months. Was scared of tracking back parvo.

Well This caused Apollo, the 7 year old male to gain some weight.

After the puppies found homes, we have been playing fetch for 10 to 15 minutes. Taking a short break and then walking for 40 minutes.

I hope this is enough exercise for them but it's really all I could give them with little time for me to even cook for myself.
