Owen is about 6 1/2 months old now and I've been attempting to brush his teeth - but he really hates it. The other day I noticed a thin line of brownish stains on the side of both of his back molars, in the crevises. Is this tooth decay? I'm surprised because he's still a puppy and I see some of his other teeth are still growing in. I tried to brush it off but it won't come out. I tried rubbing it off with a Qtip, but that didn't work. I'm just wondering if I need to bring him to the vet to get his teeth cleaned/worked on or if it's just a stain (possibly from his kibble?) that'll go away. Yesterday I started to switch his dinner meals to a raw diet, so hopefully that'll reduce the buildup. Let me know what you guys think - Thanks!

Keep up with the brushing. Henry hates it, but I try to do it at least weekly, and the vet is always shocked at the condition of his teeth. They are white with just a touch of brown at the gums. I don't know what your using for a brush, but my other puppy with the small, small mouth tolerates a finger brush more than the doggy toothbrush.

My friend is of the opinion that even a small amount of brushing at a time is better than nothing. Have you tried one of those rolls that you smear the toothpaste on?
Okay, thank you for the feedback - I'm glad I won't have to put him through a dental cleaning yet :) I use this green colored dog toothbrush I got from the petstore. It has two sizes of brushes on each end, but I only use the small one since the big one is too big for his mouth. I think the small brush fits his mouth pretty well, but he just hates getting his teeth brushed and thrashes! He eventually settles down, but it takes a while and by then both of us have had it. His teeth are bright white except for those aforementioned brownish stains in the two molar crevices in the back of his mouth.

Aloha - do you use the Primal raw diet? That's the one I started Owen on, but I wasn't sure if I should get the bones too since originally I thought bones were not good to give to dogs, but obviously, those meaty ones must be okay :) Which ones do you get and how often do you give them?
Nancy, keep at it! My Theo reacts the exact same way to having his teeth brushed, but it's just something we all have to get used to. It'll be well worth it in the long run.
Thanks everyone! I noticed that the stains are gone from his molars and they are nice a white now :) Changing his diet seems to have helped quite a bit! He also seems to tolerate the toothbrush a bit more now as well.
