Hi everyone,

So this isn't exactly a "corgi health" question, but as I'm starting to seriously look into getting a puppy, one of my major concerns is of course, healthcare. As we all know, vet bills can be insanely expensive, and I don't make that much money that I can just pay it all so easily. So I was wondering what all of you guys do about vet bills?

Of course, there's pet insurance. For those of you that purchase that, how much coverage is enough? Do you get the full coverage, with all the preventive care and stuff covered? Or just the accidental/disease coverage? Are most insurance companies pretty good about following up on claims? I've read that with pet insurance, you have to pay up front first, and then they reimburse you. That would really suck if you had to pay for a very expensive procedure and they take forever to reimburse...

I've also heard some people say it's better to just put what you'd pay monthly into a savings account. But then I'm worried about what to do if something happened to my puppy. Obviously if I just started putting money into the account, I won't have much saved up yet. On the other hand, it would kinda be nice to have that money just in case, instead of having to pay for the insurance if my puppy ends up being super healthy and doesn't need much besides the basic vet care...

Then there's CareCredit... But then in the end I'd still have to pay for all of it. So I don't know if it would be good to rely solely on that.

Anyway, so please tell me what all of you do about paying for healthcare. Thank you!!

Thank you for your comment, Maddie. I'm sorry to hear about Nugget... :( I'm pretty sure I should qualify for carecredit since I have good credit. But I'll definitely start saving as well. Thanks again!

Hi fellow corgi lovers, this is my first post on the forum! Great thread. When I adopted Alex, she was suffering from separation anxiety (she had been with another family for two months) and my vet (whose office I work in!) suggested taking her for active physical therapy to get her mind off her first family. He usually treats my pets "on the house", but he doesn't do PT, so I had to find another vet ... to make a long story short, cute little Alex wind up costing me close to a thousand bucks! (God I love her...) A friend of mine suggested taking out a pet insurance policy for her. I'd never considered it before, but when I looked into it apparently now that she was already "diagnosed", her separation anxiety was considered a preexisting condition. Then my sister (who I also love) told me she uses a discount program called Pet Assure, which I had actually heard of because we accept it at the clinic where I work. I signed Alex up for it, and now I still pay out of pocket for her treatment but only 75% of the bill. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Thanks guys!

I'd rather not take the risk of submitting the claim and not getting the money back.  Of course, some people can benefit from either, depending on their situation.  So in my case, discount plans are better than pet insurance because most insurance do not cover pre-existing conditions.  Besides Pet Assure, I've heard of one other discount plan called: United Pet Care discount plan.  It is available in AZ, CA, CO, NV, and TX.

I feel like if they don't pay and they were suppose to, they would get in a lot of trouble though.. If you sued them, you'd most likely win way more. So it wouldn't really be smart for an insurance company to not pay up, I guess. I'll definitely check out those discount plans though. Sounds interesting.

Thank you for your comment, Gabi. And welcome to MyCorgi. :] It seems working for a vet office really is the cheapest way. Haha. Too bad I don't want to quit my current job. I didn't know about these discount programs, but I'll definitely look them up for sure. Hope Alex is feeling better now!

She's doing a lot better. I found a great therapist who's almost as loving to Alex as I am :) And I don't consider it working at a vet's office, I think of it as doing what I love and getting paid for it.. lol

That's awesome! But really, who can blame her? How can anyone NOT love a corgi? Haha.

See, that's why I can't quit my current job also. I love it too much. Haha.

I send Gwynnie into a bank with a note and a bag:

"Put $5,000 in small unmarked bills into the bag, and nobody gets hurt."

She always comes out with the money, and we've never gotten caught.

Amazing what a cute smile can get away with.

Haha thanks for your comment, John. I'll have to try that out. Lol.

Dino has money saved for an emergency. He also has a Disney Visa. But most of the time the vet said that he is soo good that he does not need to pay.

Thank you for your comment, Steve. A Disney Visa? That's pretty cute. Haha. I'll have to try and train my corgi to charm the vet into giving us free visits too. Haha.

I work at a vet, and I've never heard good things about pet insurance yet. We all seem to like Care Credit best. Putting money in a savings count is probably a better idea than pet insurance. It's always good to have an emergency stash, so you can be prepared. Hopefully you wont have to use it!
