Too much Barking,,,help!
Hello all! I need some advice from my fellow corgi owners. I have read that Corgis are barkers due to their breed, however, my breeder denied this. Every book I have read since bringing him home on Corgis state that they are barkers. Oliver has always been an barker for appropriate things, but now he's out of control!! Barks all the way to daycare,, and ever since we've opened up the windows for the warmer weather, he barks at everything!! His hearing sensitivities are at an all time HIGH! Last night, I had to get up and close all the downstairs windows and that helped him.
As some of my friends know, we have nicknamed him "Bob Barker", or "Snarls Barkley!!" I don't understand the barking in the car ride. I thought dogs loved riding around in cars!! I used to let him sit up front but he has thrown me out of gear, opened windows, etc., so back in the back seat he went! Doesn't matter where he is in the car, he barks like crazy. I put on Classical music, give him a chewy, open the windows, pet him, and that seems to calm him down but am just wondering if others have the same kind of problems. My husband thinks it's due to him being traumatized by my car since it's the vehicle we brought him home from the breeders and it was a three hour ride. My husband picks him up in his truck when he is exhausted from daycare and he sleeps most of the way home. I drop him off in the morning when he's full of energy!! Any info or advice would be appreciated!
P.S. We will not use those barking shock collars.

I honestly don't think a thundershirt will help at all in the car situation. If he barks like a maniac when going to daycare I'm guessing it is more out of excitement than anxiety. Corgis are smart, he knows exactly where he is going and exactly what fun will be there. I also don't think its anxiety since he is so good in the car coming home. If it were anxiety, even a tired corgi will bark and pace and pant etc on the car ride home. I'd just take him for LOTS of car rides. Go to different locations, change up the routine. Get in the car and drive around the block. Etc. so car doesn't always equal daycare. Franklin would whine and pace when we used to go to the dogpark, as soon as we turned onto the long road that led to the park he would go bonkers. It's hard to train out of them if he goes EVERY morning and is constantly rewarded by getting to get out and play with his buddies so I would just restrain him in the car so he can't get into trouble.
Also, praising for barking at "good" stuff is going to confuse him a lot because he doesn't know what would be considered "good" and what would be inappropriate. All he knows is barkig=praise. Corgis are natural barkers so I wouldn't praise for barking AT ALL. Instead teach him an "enough" or "quiet" command and when he barks at inappropriate stuff you can tell him to stop. A squirt bottle set on the blast type setting worked great for Franklin, they make these small thin chains for dog training that you throw at/by them that is meant to startle them (and won't hurt if you accidently make contact). I've thrown a pillow or two at Franklin lol. If he is persistent then crate at night, keep him leashed to you durning the day and correct with a physical correction (sharp tug on the leash) when he barks and tell him quit. Franklin knows "quiet" but still will woof under his breath and if he REALLY is dying to bark he will go in the other room away from me where he thinks I can't heart it. Try adding lemon or lime juice to the squirt bottle, dogs hate citrus.

Thanks Melissa, I'll try taking Oliver on different car trips. I think that's a good idea. He only goes to daycare three days out of the week but I get your point. As for the spray bottle, tried that, doesn't work, and he doesn't mind citrus, in fact he licks it right up, even the bitter spray for keeping dogs away from chewing on furniture he finds rather tasty, which thankfully, he only did once. The command for "enough" is working after we have told him he's done a good job. Got that one from the dog whisperer himself, Cesar Milan He has been better in the past two days and he is now sleeping in our bedroom too which he seems to enjoy and quiets and calms him. We have had a fan on and I think the white noise may help him. I do appreciate your suggestions especially while walking him on the leash so thanks Melissa! He wasn't able to climb up the stairs to our bedroom upstairs but mastered them last night. It was very exciting! I will be posting a video on here of that great feat to the "Chariots of Fire" theme!

We crate our girls in the car. This makes them feel safe and they sleep most of the time. Our sable is a the real barker even at home. We have to put her in the bathroom for short time outs (15 minutes) and that helps. Our trainer also said teaching them the bark and quiet commands is also helpful. To teach the bark command our trainer showed us to put your hand out in front of their face in a fist and as you open your hand, give the bark command and reward, reward, reward. Then you can teach them the quiet command in between each bark commnd lesson, alternating between the two.
