Has anybody used this for their corgis? Kirby has been on it for about 1 1/2 months or so now and I am just curious if anybody else has used it for behavior modificaiton in their corgis. Since I've moved I've noticed he just seems so "blah" at home. The move coincided with the time his medications were supposed to reach full effect. I've been doing research and am worried that the vet has overdosed him on the medication so I am just wondering if anybody has used it and how much your corgi weighs and the mg you give. Also what kind of response did you see? I'm not sure if this is a new way for Kirby to cope with stress or if he is being overdosed on the medication resulting in a very subdued corgi. He almost seems more scared now than before but not acting out like he used to. He is a corgi pancake more often than not just plastered to the floor not really playing or interacting with anybody. He is active and playful in the morning but that's about it. His vet is on vacation until next Thursday when I plan to speak to her about his dose, but just curious if anybody else has experience with this medication?

Is there another vet at the practice that you could speak to about this, so you don't have to wait til next Thursday to see if the dose is too high?  :)

Hi Melissa, no, not on dogs, i think it's quite ballsy to do so. It is a powerful drug, mainly used to treat human with OCD, side effects are quite bad in my opinion, some people may experience insomnia / nightmare / anxiety, but of course it varies from individual. Whatever you do, don't try to taper off yourself, it often requires a tranq with a reduced dose, wait for your vet's recommendation. I don't know about treating anxiety with this drug, but with OCD, it takes about 3 months to see results.

I'm not going to do anything without consulting his vet, just wondering if in practice they do differently that what is recommended in pharmacology books. She had me do 1 capsule twice a day for two weeks then increase to 2 capsules twice a day. She said its recommended to do a slow introduction to the medication and it would take about 6 weeks to see full effect. When I do the calculations, 2 pills twice a day is almost 4 times the high amount that is recommended for his weight so its very concerning. She is the second vet I've talked to about Kirby so I hesitate to bring a 3rd vet into the mix. I know this can cause liver problems and kirby has vomited twice in the last few weeks so I am just worried I may be slowly poisoning him. I may just involve a 3rd vet because if I am overdosing I worry about doing it for another full week. Unfortunately this medication comes in a capsule so how to taper is limited. Basically all you can do is go from 2 pills to 1 pill since you can't split them. I will talk to a vet today though to see what is recommended in dogs.

yup, that's why I said a reduced dose often required a trang. Again, this is very experimental, be patient, it just takes time to find the right balance of rx combination.

Poor you, and poor Kirby:(

I might get a  second opinion if for no other reason than to put your mind at ease.  Also, if you have a well-educated naturopathic vet in your area, you might try them.  There is much they can do with acupuncture and natural essences.  Best of luck to you both...

I talked to a vet today. He is in fact being overdosed. She gave me a plan for decreasing his dose to an appropriate level and we are going to talk in more detail tomorrow about the future plan. It was crazy at work today so I just got to discuss the current dose and if it is in fact too high. I am hoping to find the happy medium between totally drugged Kirby and totally neurotic Kirby.

Glad to hear it, sorry I wish I could be more help, but I'm not licensed to treat canine :( You will find that happy medium, it just takes time.

Good for you for checking. You sensed something was not right with your baby and trusted your instincts. Good call!
