Stepping Stones... Headstones Maybe...
This was posted on my facebook page today. My first thought was "hey, I could do this and make a headstone for Frosty that would have his pawprint, and I could put his name with it!" Kind of felt like a gruesome death-harbinger I guess, but really, I have always felt guilty that our cats that passed don't have personal markers at all. I just go out and get something generic for them. With this recipe I could make one for each of my pets, and then store them until they were needed in the future!
Also, I thought, how cool would it me to make corgi footprint stepping stones all over my yard? My only concern is that one of my friends mentioned she thought they would melt in the sun and rain outside. Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing? Can you clear coat them or something to make them hold out better in the elements?

Honestly, I'm not sure salt dough would hold up against the weather for years. It would probably wear down, since really they are meant for like ornaments or something indoors. Instead, I would go with a stepping stone kit. It comes with a concrete mix that you just add water to, and also a mold to pour it into... then you just make actual stepping stones, and you can do their paw prints. Then you could even decorate with mosaic glass, or beads, and etch their names into the stones. The only thing is make sure you rinse their paws super well after making the print so the concrete doesn't irritate the skin!

I agree with Allie May. I got a stepping stone kit one year and made a concrete stepping stone which would have lasted forever, but the glass stones fell out after a few years so I ditched it. If you want to make something to last, I would suggest using concrete and don't add extras. If you wait until you need a headstone you can put the dates on it like people ones have.

My vet did something similar for me when Kramer died. It came in the mail after a few weeks and the tears started all over. I have been looking for a frame to put it in.

My vet did the salt dough paw prints when each of my German Shepherds died. I was very happy that they did this since it meant a lot to me to have their paw prints, but I would never have been able to do it myself after the dog died. They decorated it and put the dog's names on each one. They had these ready when I picked up their ashes.
I agree with Allie May. The concrete stepping stone kit is a much better idea. Snickermom was right that you should not add extra stones and such. Our local humane society pours concrete around the shelter and people pay to have their dog's (cat's or family member's) name in their square. Some people add stones, dog tags, marbles, etc. and these items work their way out in a few years. Some people have made impressions in the concrete with an object and then remove the item and let it dry. That works pretty well. Also, when I have helped with this we are sure to have a wash station for the dogs paws since concrete will dry out their pads and cause irritation.
