Flea Medication - Bio Spot
I applied Bio Spot on Dexter last night and a minute after applying it when we were on our way out the door for a walk he started running around the house rubbing his head and sides on the floor and carpets as if he knew it was there and was trying to rub it off (he acted this way a little when I tried the Gentle Leader on him).
During the walk he continued to rub on the carpet, sidewalk, and grass (had a little diarrea from the stress)...
I am a little worried about him... he still ate and drank so it didn't affect his appetite. But he seemed to mope a little all evening. In order to keep him from running around the house I kept him in his pen and he just layed there, moping. His late evening walk was not any better (though he didn't have diarrea anylonger)
This morning he seems to be better... still rubbing a little but happy to go out for his morning walk.
Should I bath him to take the Bio Spot off?... Has anyone else had this reaction from their dogs? I think I need to place him on some sort of flea treatment because he has been scratching a lot.

We are going to the Vet tomorrow. I am going to ask about the Comfortis. Vet's receptionist says it's the only flea med that the doctor Guarantees. That's a big word!!

Ein does not tolerate bio spot at all. It makes him itch like crazy. Lucas' mom is a retired groomer and when I asked about it, she said that she's heard of a lot of dogs having trouble with it. Personally, I would wash it off. We haven't had any trouble with Frontline, K9Advantix or Advantage (though I don't like Advantage because it seems to take longer to absorb into our dogs' skin and winds up all over our hands when we pet them). Unfortunately, they're more expensive (which is why I tried the bio spot), but none of my three dogs have had a reaction to any of them.

We have a terrible flea problem. Have tried Frontline, Frontline Plus and Advantage. Rusty is very allergic to flea bites. Got Natures Guardian this week. I like this! Rusty is a lot more comfortable. Using Hydrocortisone lotion on the sore spots.

Certain herding breeds are highly sensitive to the main ingredient in flea meds. I know for sure shelties are - can cause seizures and other serious problems. My vet prescribed interceptor for my sheltie. I don't give my corgi anything for fleas - he already has enough problems with sensitive skin and stomach. We do daily flea checks and will only find one occasionally.

I've heard nothing but bad stories from BioSpot...Frontline used to be my favorite for my cats, but the fleas come back so quickly...I'm not sure if they are just used to it so it doesn't work as long or what...but when I got Abby, I took her to our vet and they suggested Comfortis...it's given orally so you can play with your pet right away. Abby had no allergic reaction to it and there are less chances of one because it isn't a topical "poison". AND...even better...it was only $12 for one pill, given once a month!! I'll spend $50-ish on a 3-pack of Frontline for my cats and I'm very frustrated with it's lack of working. BUT, long story short, I'd call your vet and ask what you can do about taking it "off". I believe the back of the package says you can wash your pet with mild soap and water to help lessen the reaction. But, as far as being able to give another treatment right away, your vet would be the best person to talk to about that. Good luck. I know how frustrating those little bugs can be!!

We got comfortis yesterday. Just like they said the Vet guaranteed it. Rusty did not vomit, one of the possible side affects. I combed him this morning and did not find one live flea. found some dead ones. Vet said to give it with food and something with oil. (Cheese, Fish Oil). SO FAR SO GOOD

Cheese, that's no problem. The dogs love it!
Does it work against ticks too? Does it only kill adult fleas, and do the fleas have to bite the dog in order to die?
I guess I should read the literature, huh? I'm just excited about the new product. Frontline works great but I don't like the messy application process.

Rusty got his first Comfortis just about 1 month ago. FANTASTIC. No more fleas and we also found 2 very dead ticks on him. I talked to the people who own our pet resort today and they said they are also thrilled with it. By the way they also raise corgis.

i put chloe on comfortis a few months ago and have had no problems at all and it is still working great for her. i haven't found one fles on her since we started it and its a lot more afordable and longer lasting than anything else i've tried.

This conversation sure is interesting! In my area we see more dog lice than fleas. Frontine seems to work best on the lice. I've heard horrible things about Bio-Spot, though I've never used it myself. It seems to do a number on smaller dogs in particular. Perhaps the dosage is high for their size. I have a few customers who like comfortis quite a bit, but agan, I haven't tried it. Banjo's never had any sort of "passengers" - quite a feat considering where we work!

I had to look up spinosad (apparently the active ingredient in Comfortis), as I am an entomologist by training, to see what it's mode of action was as well as toxicity rating for mammals.
This is a new class of insecticide produced by a bacteria (discovered only one time at an abandoned distillery in the Carribean--how random!) that I've come across in horticultural products. It is said to have low toxicity to mammals when ingested, and is especially valuable because it is different than the other insecticides which pests (including fleas) have developed some resistance to.
While it is strange to feed insecticide to our dogs, these are the only things we can do to effectively control flea outbreaks. I suspect that since dogs have relatively short life spans, we don't see many effects from chronic exposure.
Fleas, while a real pain when they're on your dog, are such interesting insects. Did you know that egg hatch is stimulated by vibration? That's just amazing.
