Help for Charlie
Can anyone give me any advise on Charlie's skin problems. He scratches constantly, and has allergies. I gave him a bath in vet prescription shampoo last sat. and he is even worse. He is fed natural balance dog food, grain free allergy formula. He doesn't seem to want to walk in the grass so I am beginning to wonder if he can be allergic to grass? He is also shedding buckets of hair. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks.

I would still check on the dog food if none of the other suggestions help.
From my understanding, the allergy formulas limit the number of protein sources so it's less likely that the dog is allergic to that food. To me, that means there's still a possibility that the dog is allergic to that one protein source / meat. Plus, I still think there's other additives in dog food that can cause a reaction if not necessarily a food allergy.

Tried the vet prescription shampoo several years ago. It did not work in fact he got worse. Washes all of the oil out their coat. Comb and brush then comb and brush some more.

Did you fertilize or use anything else on the grass? Are you going to a park? Are they using anything?
My friend's dog is like this too. You can have allergy testing done or do a trial on your own.
Try a bland diet. (chicken and rice; unless chicken is a problem)
Add in one ingredient at a time.
Eliminate grains in the diet (Instinct, Evo); esp if you think grass may be a problem.
Are you supplimenting with brewers yeast???
You can have your vet start prednisone for a short time...

My friend has a Chocolate lab who chews herself raw-after years she was told to give her LYCOPENE The anti oxidant found in tomatoes. Stopped the itching and chewing within 24 hours. Living in S. Florida it was also seasonal, spring & summer. I'm sure any drug store or vitamin shop sells lycopene in pill form. Good luck, I'm sure this will make Charlie a "happy camper".

The September 2008 issue of dog fancy also has an article that may help. We also got a receipe for honey shampoo out of one of the dog fancy issues and it really helped one of our dogs. Honey has been proven to be an anti-bacterial via science. Let me know if you want the breakdown...

Did Charlie get an allergy test done yet? Our Weimaraner is an allergenic dog too (much like me--and sadly we are allergic to a lot of the same things.) He can't have the bulk of what the mainstream Petsmart and other stores sells other than Avoderm and I think Blue Buffalo.
He would have breakouts and first we thought he had mange cause of the amount of hair he lost but it was a staph infection. He got it from all the scratching he did and chewing too. We thought he was allergic to wheat but we were totally wrong. He's allergic to all the common outdoor things as well as the indoor stuff that most people are allergic to. He's allergic to corn, beets (and i mean beets the red thingies), turkey, rabbit and yeast. He's also allergic to cotton and wool.
If you haven't had Charlie checked, I would suggest that you do. The amount of relief your puppy gets is worth the cost as well as everyone's sanity (Charlie included.)
Good luck with Charlie. Oh, we also thought he had a flea allergy, but he happens to be allergic to roaches and dust mites instead....sigh...our special little boy.
Oh, I would also look into his shampoo too.
