My first corgi Baxter used to wade in the water but not actually swim, and other corgi's I've seen at the dog park do the same. My current corgi Hunter was first afarid of the water but after bringing him in with me, he loves to swim in the lake. He doesn't just wade he actually SWIMs. It is so funny and cute to watch.

Does anyone else have a corgi that swims? Or are corgis supposed to be able to swim? And should I buy him a life jacket?

i want my dog to swim. i bought a kiddy pool for him to practice but hes so scared that he wont release his legs off the ground and just float. haha

but ive seen pictures of other corgis swimming! yes a life jacket would definitely be cute and safe! :]
My Pem, Moose, loves to wade in his kiddie pool. But when we go to the park, our Cardigan, Dixie, loves to swim in the lake. But we keep her on her leash and don't let her go out into the lake. Moose loves to bite at water from the hose or sprinklers, but doesn't actually swim. I would think that if Hunter's swimming freely in the lake, you should probably get him a life jacket.
My corgi loves to swim in the gulf...we did buy her a life jacket but she only wears it sometimes when she swims.
Chloe loves to swim! She is too much of a wimp to jump in though.
Jack loves to swim! He just jumps right in and paddles as far as he can go. He used to just sit on the edge, but that only lasted a couple of days, then he saw a tennis ball and went right in after it! He even tries to get in the bathtub with us at night. We bought him a kiddie pool, but he's too short to get in at the moment.

I think a life jacket would be good if he was to go out in rough water such as a beach or something, but until he really gets out and starts paddling, maybe it would be a good idea. :]
We took Grover to the lake a few weekends ago, out on my sister's pontoon boat. I put on his life jacket and got in the water with him and he totally FREAKED out. He hated it. He looked terrified. I tried it twice and both times, he kicked his leggs and tried to swim, but he was horrified! I felt aweful for even doing it a second time!
But he's only 7 months old, maybe when he's older?
I would maybe try bringing in the water starting from the beach so that he can choose how far he would like to go in and if he likes the feeling of not knowing how deep it is then he will keep swimming. It took Hunter 4 times of wading in from the beach before he started swimming out deeper where he cant touch.
My little Max just loves the water, he's 9 months old so this is his first summer. We bought him a little wading pool and he hangs out in it as much as he can. He also loves to get in the bath, even when I'm trying to clean it, not a good time. We have a creek near our weekend cabin where Max took to swimming his very first time. As soon as the depth was more than his short little legs he just starded paddling. He really seemed proud of himself too. He's even chased the King Salmon down streem, they were way bigger than him. He's also been in a nearby lake a few times and loves the swimming. i stayed very close by while he was swimming. Life jackets are always a good idea. Just be careful. My sister-in-law told me of her west highland terrior and his life jacket. He was having a blast all day long playing in the lake. What she didn't know was that the jacket didn't fit exactly right as she thought it did and water was being forced down his throaght the whole time. He had some problems during the night and the next day, which involved his kidnys, he almost didn't make it. Don't mean to puit a damper on it, I just felt so terrible for the little guy wouldn't want it to happen to another. Enjoy and be safe with your little Hunter in the water, it is very funny to watch them swim.
See that is my fear with a life jacket. I'm afraid that it might make things worse for him, scare him, or make it harder for him to swim.
Banzai tries to swim in the water bowl if that counts? I'm looking into getting him a baby pool.
My corgi, Rose, loves to swim. She jumps off the side into the pool and loves to race beside me when I am swiming. She even barks when she is racing!!! In addition, she loves to play fetch in the pool My other corgi, Teegan, will only come in the pool when I am holding her! Now Teegan loves to play fetch, but only on dry land. We wanted them to know how to get out of the pool in case they fell in, They both relate to where the stairs are now and knows how to swim to the stairs, but if you put one foot in the pool, Rose is jumping in with you! She does know she is not allowed in the pool unless we are in the water! The breed is such a smart one!
That is sooo cute! And yes they really are a smart breed : )
