Sebaceous Adenoma
Chester saw a vet yesterday for a growth on his head that had gotten the size of a pencil eraser, then broke open, expelling a small amount of pus and blood. It was determined that it is a sebaceous adenoma. The main problem has been that it won't heal, because Chester keeps reopening it when he rubs his head on the carpet. Instead of removing it, the vet gave us Derma-Vet Ointment to apply 3 times a day. If it doesn't get better after a week, he'll consider removing it. Has anyone else experienced these growths?

Agree with Jennifer. If they don't open and are not in a position where they can be irritated easily (for example by grooming) they can be left alone. They are common in older dogs. If they open, it's easier to remove them. I would ask for local anesthesia, if possible.

Thanks for the responses! We went out of town right after I posted, with no internet. I applied the ointment the whole time we were on our camping trip and it healed right up, but seems bigger now. He's gotten it a little irritated on our carpet now that we're home, but nothing like before. I'd like to have it removed, especially since I read on-line that they can turn cancerous. We're looking into how much that would cost.
