Rylee is now about 14 months old and he weighs 38 pounds. We were wondering if this was a bit over weight or not.

We also have been changing his food a lot because he has become stubborn about eating it. We tried putting cottage cheese in with the mix and that lasted for a good week. Are there any specific brands out there we should look for?

38 lbs sounds enormous! Sounds like missing a few meals would not hurt him one bit. Unless he is well oversized this is far too much weight! How much are you feeding him? Typical sized adult male corgis usually weigh in the 15 to 32 lb range. He should be receiving no more than 1/2 cup twice daily. If he doesnt eat within 10 minutes pick up his food and offer it at the next meal time.
Oh my, 38? You don't mean 28? :p

Mac was 26 about a year ago; not sure how much he weighs now. I feed Mac 1/2 cup of dog food with less than1/4 cup fresh meat. Meals are given twice daily. He's slightly taller at the shoulders than most Corgis I see. He looks relatively fit to me since his waist tucks in and up beyond the ribs slightly. From the top looking at his back, it looks like the shape of his torso narrows slightly as it passes the ribs. I can also see the muscles in his thighs. I can feel his ribs through his skin but not as easy as before. Anyway, I think he's relatively fit so I think the amount I feed is pretty good for his size.

Still it's probably not perfect. He could probably improve to get even better fit. I saw a youtube video explaining how to see if your dog is overweight. The dog they had look fit to me with my untrained eye. But after they explained how to check, they said he was slightly overweight. So maybe Mac could loose weight a little. Who knows?
Rylee does get 1/2 cup of food twice daily - once in the morning, once at dinner time. And his torso does tuck in after the ribs and he doesnt look unfit....I dont know?
Lisa, how big is Rylee? My Charlie is way oversized - I call him my corgizilla! I would love to get him down to 38 pounds. My vet says he is a little overweight but not obese. I worry anyway because of the stress on his back and stubby legs. I add frozen greenbeans to fill him up while slightly decreasing his food. He loves his greenbeans! Make sure he gets plenty of exercise and feed him a premium kibble. They cost more but have less fillers and useless bad additives that can cause health problems. Rylee will also have smaller and fewer poo! Charlie has to have grain free food due to allergies. Check out past forums on food. There are plenty of corgi owners on here who have great advice. Good luck!
38 pounds sounds very big for a Pembroke. My Cardigan is 38 pounds and I think he needs to lose a few. I would follow Sam's suggestion about taking the food away. You can also try the Green Bean Diet.

It may be helpful to see some current pictures of his whole body. Also, your vet should be able to tell you if Rylee is overweight.
Sidney is almost 14 months old and 23 pounds. He also gets 1/2 cup twice a day, with a little something mixed in, like a couple spoons of chicken, cottage cheese or plain yogurt. He gets a long walk every day (almost!) and free time in the yard when he wants it.

We've gone to the "premium" foods, with no fillers. His coat looks great and his poops are solid. He gets Wellness Ocean Core. You might also consider Canidae all stages.
My Basil was a fit Corgi at 37 lbs. He was oversized. My Lizzie was obese at the same weight. She is more within Breed Standard for general size, but her love for goose eggs caused her to completely lose her waistline. We have been able to keep her away from the goose eggs and she is on a green bean diet. 1/4 cub kibble andd 1/4 cup green beans 2 x a day. She has lost a total of 8lbs and has a well defined waist line. Still has a way to go, but she is active and happy. You should be able to see a well defined waist and be able to feel the ribs without them being too prominent.
I have a Cardigan who weighs 47 lbs. He is not overweight at all. GO to my page and check out his pictures and videos. Have had it confirmed by the vet; he has a large bone structure and a solid muscle mass. He has a definite waist and I can feel his ribs.
If the vet isn't concerned....ask if he if believes he has a large bone structure. You may just have a largely built Pembroke.
Here is a video of him, if he didn't have all his muscles he would never be able to do "The Wave" for long periods of time.

I changed Corey's diet to wellness healthy weight and he is losing weight. He loves eating it. He has been on other brands without the success. The other thing you might want to think about is how much exercise is he getting?
NO SNACKS!!!

My dog would eat anything if it had the chance. I also have replaced 1/4 of his kibble with frozen green beans. He loves them and it seems to be keeping him fit along with some exercise.
cody is 22 pds and he is almost 14 months old. im trying to stay with a healthy diet and go for a light jogs once in a while with me to help control his weight. he loves jogging tho, great way to get rid of his wild energy at night :]
You know, whenever I see other Corigs, much more often than not, they look overweight to me.

I can't help think that people explaining that their dog is a bigger build and naturally heavier may not be realistic regarding the health of their dog.

Remember 5-8 pounds over the standard may not seem that bad but that's actually 20-30% more weight. And it's even upwards of 40% more weight for some.

Are we being objective or are we trying to rationalize the situation? I would seek additional opinions if one find their dogs well outside the standard
