I want to treat Arrow to a chew toy, a real gnaw all day long if I let him chew toy.

I know this can be a controversial issue haha so let me tell you what I have already etc.

He loves his puppy Kong. He will get into it if it has an actual dry treat stuck in there or I freeze his kong with about 1/4 cup of wet down food. But he could care less about chewing if its just peanut butter or yogurt, it'll occupy him way less time if things arent falling out. Just licks what he can reach and moves on.

I have a Kong tire - same story, has to be rattling with yummies or he will just lick it.

He treated ice and carrots like chew toys this past month so it hasnt come up before.

He has a range of toys. But I would love to get him something that it's sole purpose is to chew. He is teething, lost 2 of those front teeth this week. So something puppy friendly.

Nylabone seems weird - nylon?

What about rawhides - I hear all sorts of things both good or bad.

Bully stick? What IS a bully stick? There are all sorts of shapes and sizes around here.

I live in LA so I am sure I can find whatever healthy good uber dog chew toy you guys can come up with. I hear controversial stuff about it all. It's ok to be a supervision only chew toy.

We give our 3 month old corgi bully sticks and nylabones. She will chew the bully sticks forever. I'm afraid to give her antlers and the like because there were a few threads on here about chipped teeth.

Our 2 year old corgi had rawhides when he was a puppy. After reading about the problems they can cause we have chosen not to give them to our dogs anymore even though they were never a problem for us in the past.

Snickers had to have both big pre-molars pulled because they were broken, I think, on antlers. You can get odor free bully sticks. The good thing about bully sticks are that they are completely digestible. As long as the dog doesn't choke on it, it won't clog up their innards. And they aren't likely to choke on them because they don't get gummy like rawhides. The bad news is they are fairly expensive- and only last Snickers 30 minutes for a 6 inch. Snickers has several Nylabones she chews on, the challenge is to get them started. Rough up one end and rub peanut butter on it. Offer it frequently this way. Maybe try chilling it for a teething puppy. The Himalayan chews are very high value, both to Snickers and to my wallet.

I like rawhides, make sure to buy American made, I like the brand Wholesome Hide. You can find them at Pet Extreme and local pet stores. They are American made and sourced and last longer. I would stay far away from Nylabones, they are notorious for breaking teeth, also cow hooves and marrow bones. Raw knuckle bones also make a good chew but since he is teething and his gums may hurt you may want something a little softer. Nylabone does make a rubbery bone that may be good. I dont' like bully sticks, they smell awful and don't last very long, plus the idea of giving my dog a dehydrated bull penis just grosses me out.

I have worked at a vet for the past 7 years and have never seen a dog come in for a blockage from a rawhide. Many of our vets still recommend them because they are fully digestible as well. I guess any chew toy has its risk so you just need to weight the risk vs reward. Frank POSSIBLY broke his tooth on a knuckle bone but they keep his teeth shiny and white and keep him busy so I keep giving them, besides I'm not sure the knuckle bone is what did it to begin with but that bone had more of the femur (marrow bone) than most do

Himalayan chews are a good choice that I made for our pup. Abbey took to it immediately and it last for a long time. I have heard alot of negative reports about rawhides. Bully sticks are a good choice, but get the ordorless ones. Also, Abbey loves pig ears.

Griffin loves bully sticks and they keep his teeth clean.  I get them online at  valuepetsupplies.com.  I think antlers and Himalayan chews are too hard.  Rawhide isn't a good idea either--our basset hound would soften up a big wad and swallow it.  Of course, then she would gag and cough when it got stuck in her throat.  I had to reach down her throat and get it out.

Sky is a power chewer. So far, the best value has been a Kong "stuff-a-ball" which has lasted for months.

I have one of those, but apparently haven't learned how to use it. What do you stuff it with?

Actually I've never stuffed anything in it! He just loves to play fetch with it, or nom on it like a big pacifier. He has a regular Kong that I stuff with kibble and raw coconut oil, another favorite treat.

Thanks for all the help! I ended up getting the himalayan chews, once I knew of them I saw them everywhere, even saw them at REI! Arrow LOVED them. Hid from me convinced I was going to take it from him, it was too good, must be illegal. Now he just shoves the stinky hard cheese at me when I get home and he is so excited to share. When they get small or pieces break off, you just microwave it, it puffs up, and give it to him!

I also got him an antler for puppies -  they are cut open so the soft stuff of the antler is 3/4 of it. I'm pleased with his gentle chewing on this since I have heard of broken teeth.
