My Lils pups were born last Sunday. After seeing them with thier little tails I was really not sure about docking:( They are so cute and Ive always thought it was kind of cruel.
She was given to us already bred. The breeder had used our stud to sire. Lils owner was having a difficult pregnancy and couldnt care for Lil anymore so we adopted her. This is our first experience with newborns! Im a nervous wreck! Thank goodness Lil is a great mom and all 10 pups are healthy and happy! We love taking care of them and Lil:)
Long story short it was -30 here most of last week. All the roads were closed except for emergency travel and our vet is 70 miles away. So we never made it to the vets in time to dock. I was leaning towards not docking anyways but when my freind saw the pups she said I might have a hard time finding people who want undocked pems:(
Any thoughts?

Your friend is right. A lot of buyers will be looking for the classic "bunny butt" look. That was one of the reasons I was attracted to the looks of the breed, secondary to their temperment and breed characteristics. But, there are some buyers that do like the natural approach and actually will prefer an undocked pem. Hopefully all the pups are healthy and getting lots of attention. Of even more concern to me though would be the dewclaws. Those, if left in place can cause some serious injuries.
I have a Cardigan Corgi who is 8 1/2 months old. He has a tail and boy does it wag!!! Over here in the UK they have stopped docking so from now on both Cardis and Pems will have tails. We bought Wilf from a Crufts breeder and as soon as i saw him i fell in love with him, tail or no tail !!!!
Lorraine, Cardigans have their natural tails in the US as well. I've notice a rising interest in pems with natural bob tails and if that kind of legislation were to pass here in the US I'm sure the natural bob tail would become very popular with us "bunny butt" affectionaires.
Maybe you'll help start a movement (and all because of winter weather!).
We actually tried to get a Pem with a tail until we realized that most breeders are breeding for show and have to dock them for that reason.
I often imagine what our dogs would look like with their tails, and I see Al wagging his nubbin all the time. And sometimes, in cold weather, it looks like they're looking for something warm and fluffy to stick that cold nose under.
I've seen undocked Pems with great tails. Look at the photos from Europe.

I don't think you should have any trouble finding people who want undocked Pems. If something like that is so important to them, well, maybe you don' want to give them one of your dogs anyway.

Docking is kind of a religious issue for some people -- if you want to start a fight amongst corgi people, just start talking about docking. I don't think it should be banned by busybodies, but I wish the breed standard was docking-neutral so people could show their Pems with tails if they want to go 'au naturel'.

One thing I'd REALLY like to know is: are there any substantive difficulties among working, herding Pembrokes with undocked tails? What about working Cardies?

Did you adopt Lil before or after the pups were whelped? Hope the change was not too big a stress on Lil.
And do show us photos as they grow older!
We brought Lil home to live with us mid October so she whelped here in our home. We had known her and her previous owners for awhile before she came to live here. She fits right in here and loves the cow work!
You are right! I would hope that the future owners of these beautiful puppies love them just how they are which is undocked:)
We would of gotten our corgis either way as we fell in love with thier personalities but it didnt hurt that they were so darn cute!
Thier tails are really sweet though. They all have little white tips.
I will post pics soon:)
I was asked if i wanted Kota's tail docked and I said no. But, I am not going to show him. I love his tail. I agree that if the tail is the most important thing to the person that is going to adopt your puppies that those people may net be the best to adopt them to. But, that's jsut my oppinion and it usually doesn't count for much.
I don't think that would make anyone a worse dog owner.. When I was looking for Gibson I would not consider a pem w/a tail. In fact, I knew that I wanted a red & white pem w/good white markings. This is just what I've always wanted since I was young...and for my first dog, I wanted exactly that. I don't think I'm a bad dog owner because of it *shrug*
I've decided that my next pemmie I get in the future will have a tail. I think they're cute undocked and docked.. I could have the best of both worlds!
You may need to lower your prices on them a bit, but there are a lot of people who request tails, so you could maybe consider posting about the pups on here or other websites and get the word out. I'm sure you'll find good homes for your pups!
I talked to our vet yesterday and she said it would be too late to dock now. We are bringing the pups in monday to have the dewclaws removed and for a check up.
The more I think about it and look at other pems with tails Im confident with our decision to not dock:)

We have 4 of the pups already sold. People had contacted me before the pups were whelped with interest. I had to call the future owners and tell them that we left the tail in tact. I was surprised that no one seemed to mind:) Our stud is well known for his sweet, gentle disposition:)
So glad you didnt dock, as soon as you see their rear ends shakin with their little tails wagging wildly ull know you did the right thing.
