Grain mites in dog food
Hi everyone!
A few days ago, my wife and I were transferring food from a bag of Nutro Max Ultra puppy food into a plastic container, and at the bottom of the bag were a bunch of little black bugs! We have never seen something like this before and it really freaked us out. We have been using the food for about a month, and recently our Colby has become disinterested in the food but we were not sure why. He also was sick a few times in the past month. We took a few of the bugs to the vet and he said that they are grain mites. Has anyone ever encountered these before?
We were so upset, and we changed foods to Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice. He was sick yesterday from the abrupt food change, but the vet gave us some pills to help with nausea... and those seem to be working. We will give him about 2 weeks to get used to the food and if he is still sick, we will switch to something else like Innova.

It happens, and it can happen to any brand. Nutro have been on the recall list and also in the midst of lawsuits. Next time double check the expiration date too, try to get latest bag if possible. I went through the same thing with my dogs last year, i wasn't sure why Mocha wasn't interested in his food, then I discover the little bugs at the bottom! Another thing you can do is get a glad wrap bag, put some basil leaves in there, then poke a lot of holes throughout the bag, the smell of basil eliminate grain bugs, it is trick that I picked up from my Chinese parents, it works :)
It will take some time for the new food to adjust to his stomach, when you change, try to do it gradually mix in with the new stuff. Good luck!

OMG! that is horrible!! I am so glad to hear that they are on the recall list!
My husband and I once bought a bag of pig ears for our two pups, brought it home...gave one to each dog and they wouldn't touch them. I looked a little closer at the bag which was clear plastic...black bugs. I didn't even know there could be mites in dog food! Wow...now i'm going to be paranoid (or as I like ot call it "extra careful") and inspect every bag of dog food...

When we brought the new bag of food home from the store, that was the first thing we did! We poured the contents of the bag into a (new) air-tight storage container, inspected the inside of the bag and the food, poured the food back into the bag, and then put the bag+food into the air-tight storage container. We heard that it is best to keep the food in the original bag. Has anyone else heard this? Or can we just dump the food into the air-tight container?
