Brooklyn was diagnosed with Cancer last week. He is 12 years old and my baby boy. He has a rare one called Leiomyosarcoma. He went in for emergency surgery two weekends ago because the vet found a large mass on his spleen. They removed the mass and his spleen. She sent it off for the biopsy and well we got the bad news. She got a hold of the oncologist because it is rare to find out what we could do. There is a slight possibility that when she removed the mass and spleen she got it all but there is also that possibility that there was a cell left behind. We will not know until something happens. The vets are giving him only 1 to 3 months to live if the cancer is there and we do not do chemo, or 6/12 months with the chemo. We have decided not to do the chemo and prolong what may happen anyways, but to keep him comfortable as possible until we notice he is starting to suffer. This is so hard on us. We just put our 15 year old Corgi down November 1st. Brooklyn is doing well right now. Playing and eating just fine. My husband and I are in two different states right now and he has Brooklyn. I had to move back to Texas and he wanted to keep Brookie for company until we are joined together again in May. It is so hard for me to know that I may not get to say good bye to my bud. It is hard for my husband to look at Brooklyn every day and wonder if and when it is going to happen. Does anyone know of any Corgi cancer support groups? Please pray for all of us. That Brooklyn does not have any cancer in him and that all of us have the strength to do what is right for Brooklyn. Please do not pass judgment on us for not doing Chemo. We really feel that it is best for him to be able to live his life out with out the pain and suffering of chemo.

Darleen, I am so sorry about the devastating diagnosis. I understand your choice. Chemo has side affects that your baby wouldn't understand...at 12 yrs old it is a difficult call I fully understand your decision and you know what is right for your baby. I will keep Brooklyn and your family in my prayers. I don't know of any cancer support groups, but I know there are several here on the site that are going through or have been through something similar. Healing thoughts are going Brookly's way. These little furry angels are a gift.
I appreciate your kind words and prayers. Thanks.
Oh my gosh I am so sorry to hear about your little guy. I understand your plight and I wish you all the best.
First of all, let me offer you my thoughts and prayers! Secondly, I completely understand your decision. I will definitely keep you and Brooklyn in my prayers. I think there are some corgi cancer support groups on Yahoo.
All of my thoughts and healing vibes are going out to you and to Brooklyn. Your choice to let him live a happy life until his time instead of doing chemo is understandable.

My Courtney died of cancer, but we only had a week with her after the diagnosis. I was at college when she died. It was very hard.

Here is a group you might join.
I am very sorry. I do not know of any support groups for cancer. You guys are in my thoughts. I'm sure you will do the best by Brookie. Sounds like you have a good plan. I agree about not doing chemo. I hope the best for you all. Tell your husband to give Brookie lots of hugs for me.
Sorry to hear about your baby. I don't think anyone will fault you for your decision - chemo is extremely difficult and, for a 12 year old dog, the risks would probably outweigh the benefits.

Hugs to you and your family.
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. My parents also decided not to do chemo on their 12 year old pup, and I completely understand. Chemo is so tough on dogs, and they just don't understand why they are feeling so icky. We send all of our thoughts and prayers your way.
I am so sorry for the horrible news you have been given on your friend. I can't imagine how you are feeling. I have to say though..at your dogs age..I think I would of decided against the chemo as well. Sometimes its more important to have quality out of life then the last few extra months be in agony. There is a lady I know that has gone through Cancer in her canines and has devoted her whole life on this topic. You may find her on http://www.petloversparadise.ning.com and look up the administrator SuzSee or Meshell. or go to
Visit PET CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY
which is a private network set up by Meshell herself who is doing extra studies on canine cancer.
I praise you for deciding quality of life over quantity. I've seen what chemo and radiation can do to a human that is strong and can fight. I cannot imagine what it would do to an innocent dog. When Chester was diagnosed with diabetes, I was also told that he had a mass on his liver. At the time, I couldn't afford to even have the biopsy done. I also didn't want to know if it was cancer. I wouldn't subject him to the pain and suffering of Chemo or radiation. It's been since May, so I guess it wasn't cancer.

God Bless you and Brooklyn. You are all in my thoughts and prayers
How ironic that just a few short weeks after I posted this that my vet suspects that the mass on Chester's liver has metastasized to his brain. I've never had the mass biopsied.
