This is the first time we have had any health problems for little Penny and it has been about 8 months since we have had her. First of all, Tuesday night she had this metallic smell on her breath, kind of like iron. I was brushing her with a FURminator and she she tries to chew the brush when she sees it like its a toy. She licked me after she tried to bite it and it smelled like iron, so I thought she cut her mouth. My husband and I looked and didn't see anything. Wednesday didn't seem to be any problems, no smell. New Year's Eve the only thing to report is that she got freaked by the neighboring fireworks. Thursday morning she went out and came back in. She was sleeping with us. After she got up, I saw a tiny spot of a brownish liquid and the metallic smell was back. There was nothing the rest of the day. Thursday night, the smell is back again. This time it seems as if she could have an infection, but when we look no swelling or redness, or even discharge at either spot. This (Friday) morning we wake up to vomit all over the kennel, she vomits a little more. I call the vet and we have an appointment for 4:20 this afternoon. I'm worried, she is laying around and really looks sick. She just went to the door and cried a little, took her out, now bloody diarrhea. Cleaned up Penelope and called the vet. They asked when that started and I said just now. They put it in her notes for now. She tried to eat, but isn't. I can't get her to drink any water. She is just laying there and I don't want her to get dehydrated or anything like that. If she continues this before our appointment, should I do anything differently? Anyone have any idea what this is? BTW, there aren't any worms in anything. This could be unrelated, but I'm getting more nervous now b/c 2 nights ago I had a dream that something was wrong with her food and now she is sick. I just hope there aren't any more food issues happening.

I hope you get some answers at the vet today, good luck to y'all.
I hope that Penelope is doing much better. Is she still teething? Sometimes when the teeth are coming in, their breath really smells awful and iron like. Thanks goodness you were able to get an apt today. Please keep us informed. Good vibes from redwood country for Penelope~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks everyone. I don't think that she is teething anymore, she is about 10 months old at this point (DOB 3/2/08). She continued to vomit and poop not good stuff so I called the vet back and they said to drop her off and if they could see her earlier than her appointment they would. Hopefully, she isn't too sick. I felt so bad for her :(
I'm sorry sweet Penelope is sick. I hope you get good news soon and she comes home happy and energetic. This is a scary thing and all of us can relate, I think.
Sounds like anal sacs from the brownish spot and metallic smell and her mouth could smell this way from cleaning herself there. I won't give any other possibilities since you have a vet appointment and this is your best way to get the correct answers . Good luck and keep us updated..PLEASE!
Could she be coming into her first heat? Sometimes they get nauseous and diarrhea w/some vomit from hormonal change. Take her temperature too and take a stool sample w/you to the vets.
Penny was spayed when she was 6 months, thanks though. The vet did call back and I did bring in a stool sample, as she was able to provide many more the vet said. Her blood work and stool test were negative for everything. They don't see anything wrong through those tests. She wasn't worried about paro and she doesn't think its an obstruction as so much has been coming out of the rear, especially with the blood. She said that her belly was a little tender and there were some spasms and she was getting dehydrated. She was given an injection for the vomiting. All they can think now is hyper gastrointestinitis, which is pretty general. She thinks it might just be a bug. They will keep her overnight with an iv for the next 12-14 hours so she doesn't get any more dehydrated. I will get a call tonight to know how she is doing. I was also told they would call if she threw up anymore, but its been about an hour now, hopefully that is a good sign. They did see her a little earlier that her appointment time. Keep little Penelope in your thoughts that there were no side effects from the dehydration and that it is only a bug. Thanks guys!
Oh, poor Penny! That doesn't sound like fun at all. I hope it's nothing serious and she bounces back good as new.
Will keep you in my thoughts.
I wonder if maybe she picked up something in the yard she shouldn't of. Maybe now she has what our vet calls "Trash-can-itis". Scooter was 6 months old and we had gone out of town to a Off-Road race. On Sunday we started our 7 hour trip home. She had eaten her breakfast than morning fine. Then about 30 minutes into our trip home she started vomitting. We were in the middle of the desert between Las Vegas and Minden Nevada. She was vomitting about once an hour. We couldn't get her to drink either. I called the vet and we went right to the vet's office as soon as we got into town. When I carried her she into the office was limp. It though for sure I was going to lose her that night. They did the same thing. IV's and a shot to settle her stomach. To this day we don't know what she picked up. Our vet though maybe she had found someone's left behind medication under the bed in the hotel room. Whatever it was it almost cost her her life. She was in intensive care for 4 days and had to stay at the hospital for 7 days. They get sick so fast. Now I watch her like a Hawk! Scooter is now 6 years old. To this day when we walk into a hotel room the first thing I do is check under the beds!!
Good luck with her and please keep us posted as to how she is doing.
Poor Penny! I don't have any suggestions as to what it might be, but I hope she feels better! Poor Dax had diarrhea and was vomiting on New Years eve, I think he was just nervous from the noise though, because he's fine now. Let us know what the vet says!
Penelope is back home now and doing much better. There really weren't any other answers as to why she was sick. It could have just been a nasty bug or she got into something with us having no idea. If she got into anything, I have no idea when it happened,we watch her pretty closely b/c she is like a vacuum! She's got some meds and a bland diet for the rest of weekend and hopefully she'll be as good as new!
That is great news... It is so scary when that happens... Glad the news is all good. Hopefully she be as good as new by next week...
