Nutty is 5 months old. When should I get her fixed? She started to "hump" my foot last night. Argg!!! I think this is a dominance and a hormonal thing, and want to stop it right away. She already nips at my hands and feet constantly, I certainly don't want her humping too. Thanks!

When I got Nala, the vet told me that we could spay her anytime after 6months, but preferable before her first heat. Talk to your vet, she will tell what is bet for Nutty. The surgery, takes a couple of hours and you'll be taking her home the same day. Watch out for her licking the scar. The vet should give you some written instructions of what to look out for, and how to keep Nutty out of trouble, pain meds , etc. In less than 48 hrs, Nutty will be back on track as if nothing happened.

There are other discussions and experiences in the forum about spaying. All very informative and entertaining. Take care and good luck!!
Really a girl dog humping??
lol. sorry but that's funny because my sister's dachshund that's also a female does the same thing. she doesn't have the heart to tell my little nieces what the dog's really doing to mommy. the girls always say, "look! ginger's dancing with mommy!" lol. my sister read up on this and agrees that it's a dominance sort of thing. my parent's cocker spaniel does the same thing to ein and she's a female as well. ein's just horribly confused when it happens. lol. we're gonna have ein fixed next month. he's going on 6 months. the vet told us that's usually the age in which you can have ein neutered. i'm not sure if this is the same for females but i know its best to have this done before her first heat cycle. as for the humping, well i'm sure it will subdue it but there's no guarantees that it will stop it completely. the vet told us the same thing for ein. he has yet to hump but he sure has been popping puppy boners as of late. very embarrassing when i'm walking him :(
Where does the name Ein come from?
Our vet told us that 5 months was ok to spay. We had Kiwi spayed when she was about 5.5 mos. old. My parents westie humps her bed and she's been fixed, I'm pretty sure that it's a dominance thing. Good luck!

I just got LaVerne spayed right at 5 months without any problems. My Vet recommended it. Shelters spay and nueter at a much younger age so I felt comfortable having her fixed at 5 months. When you do decide to get her spayed I recommend this collar as opposed to the cone. She was quite comfortable wearing it while she healed. Good luck!
Sidney used the same collar when he was neutered. It is MUCH better than the cone!

Nipping is normal but needs to be stopped.

Spaying should help with quite a few behavior issues. Good luck!
Hey Tracey, where do you find those collars at?
Hi! I got that collar from Petco. Its called the Pro collar and I got meduim size for Laverne.

There is the link. Hope this helps!
My chorgi did the humping thing to Duncan when I brought her home. She was a rescue about 5 then, and spayed. She is an alpha female, so it is a dominance action. In fact, both of my dogs did it to each other for a little while, but they finally figured out the pecking order.
Pandora was spayed at six months, and not a second later. She too displayed this dominance problem and got quite nippy with male dogs. Our breeder told us to spay at six months. I would consult with your vet to see if it is too soon.
