When I got Ofelia I didn't know she was going to have a red mask, but I could see red speckles in her face, gradually coming out more and more as the weeks passed. Also, she had a lot of red on her cheeks and ears, which might be an early indication. I didn't know how much the red was going to spread but I settled on calling her a black-headed tri with a red mask. I don't know if that's the official word for her coloring, though. The top of her head is still black and she's 10 months old now. There's still time for that to change, I suppose. But I've noticed the red has slowed in spreading. It's also spread over her shoulders, which has been fun to watch.
yes, there is a term on black headed with a red mask...i just think that they are beautiful and unique!
Oh Im not a breeder. I had been seeing info about those terms. I mean, its not for me to judge what it is. I do not want to stirr anything about a term that it is not true. So I take back the comment from the previous reply.
when juneaux was born, we actually thought she would be a black headed tri. the red slowly came in little by little. i dont know if she looks like what you're talking about. we usually just say she's a red head, with some black
I'm the breeder of Juneax, and like her owner said, we thought she would be a black-headed tri at first. I'm getting better at being able to tell at younger ages. They are simply called either black headed tris or red headed tris. The defining feature seems to be what color surrounds the eyes. Also, one little trick when they're little is to look at the inside of their ears, if it's mainly black, they should end up black headed...if the inside of the ear is more red, you've probably got a red head on your hands!
