when to get the corgi spay?

Please give me some advise on when will be the best age to spay a female corgi? I have been thinking about it since the day I brought her home. She is almost 4 mths now. I am worried that there might be complication. The vet here advised after 10 mths of age or after her 1st heat. Thank you.

My vet recommended that we spay Shayleigh around five or six months. You want to spay your dog BEFORE her first heat. If you spay your dog after her first heat you increase her chance for mammary cancer. I would recommend getting advice from another vet or possibly discussing with your current vet the possibility of spaying your dog sooner. Good luck!

Just to add to that, I found this information online...

Mammary cancer: Estrogen is one of the primary causes of canine mammary cancer, the most common malignant tumor in dogs. Animals that are spayed prior to one year of age very rarely develop this malignancy. Spaying a dog before her first heat is the best way to significantly reduce the chance your dog will develop mammary cancer. The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat.

i agree with shayleigh on this! i specifically remember our vet recommended that ein be neutered around 5 or 6 months old. that way his body would be ready and all his puppy teeth would be gone; which they are :) we just scheduled his appointment for april 16th :) i also remember her saying that females should be spayed before their 1st heat :) females begin their first heat anywhere from 6 months of age all the way to 14 months. so i would definitely start thinking about scheduling a visit in which she can go. also, remember that if she hasn't lost all her puppy teeth by the time she gets spayed, then they'll most likely want to remove them during the procedure as well; very common :) good luck!

Well, that is what I understand too, spaying before her 1st heat. But her vet in Macau insisted after 10 mths. I will go to another vet for advise tomorrow.

I just came back from volunteer meeting/orientation for my area SPCA, and they talked about spaying & neutering. This SPCA works with UC Davis Vet School very closely, and one of the research they did a few years ago was on this topic. What they found was very shocking to most people (including myself), but there is no adverse effect to altering puppies as long as they weigh more than 1.5 pounds, and they are 7-8 weeks old. Yup. That's not a typo. 1.5 pounds! From what I understand, it rattled the whole nation regarding this, but that is what I was told.

Above study was done something more recently, so 9 years ago, when my dog was getting spayed, we did it at 6 months. Our vet said to get it done definitely before the first heat. The health benefit is most effective if done before first heat, if not, then before first pregnancy. I don't know if I feel comfortable getting it done at 8 weeks, but I highly recommend getting it done before first heat.
