I never had a dog who had worms. So I'm not sure if I should be freaking out or not. But my foster dog hasn't pooped since Friday afternoon. We switched his food to whatever to Iams Proactive (it's the best food the shelter gave me so...). Is it cause of the worms that he hasn't pooped or because of something else?

I know the vets office dewormed him a few days ago when they neutered him, so...*shrugs* if you know anything please help.

ein got worms about 2 1/2 months ago. the breeder had de-wormed him when we picked him up and tested negative for worms when we took him to the vet for his 1st check up the following day. but it seems he ate an infected flea here at our complex :( about a month later. i only found out he had worms when he pooped and it had tiny white specks (similar to rice) freckling his poop. He didn't have diarrhea and wasn't constipated when he had the worms. His poop was formed and firm (normal consistency but with white specks). I called the vet and they informed me that it sounds like he had tapeworms and they'd prescribe some meds for him ($20 or so). I know that both the breeder and the vet informed me that after dogs are de-wormed they can have diarrhea but it seems that constipation could occur as well (or at least based on the info obtained for a quick google search). diarrhea is the most common side effect from having worms and being de-wormed. i'd definitely watch your pup and if they look to be in pain, can't go for another day or so or have bloody stool i'd definitely give the vet a call.
I would call the vet on Monday.
Sometimes a sudden switch in food types will cause either diarrhea or constipation. I don't know if they told you that you should switch over gradually. 1/4 new with 3/4 old a day or so, then 1/2 and 1/2 for another couple of days, etc. Also, if the stitches pull when he tries to poop, he may not want to until it is absolutely necessary. Does he act sick or upset? If he is acting normally then I wouldn't worry too much. Just watch him, and if it will set your mind at ease, go ahead and call on Monday. Some dogs don't poop daily. They will usually go if they go out and can run, but I don't know how he is doing from his surgery or if they suggested you not let him out to run for a few days.

Like I said, if he isn't acting really dumpy or in pain, then I wouldn't worry for another day or so.

Ein is what the people named one of our pups that were taken (We kept two of them). Linda
He's on limited movement from both the recent neutering (and the deworming they did in the office). I'm also limiting him because he has heart worms that needs to be treated--but is pending due to financial reasons. We have to find enough sponsorship for his treatment. They also didn't give me any food he was being fed at the shelter so I couldn't do the gradual introduction that I preferred to do.

He finally pooped Sunday and he had some worms in it. I have to say it gives me the heebee jeebies. I'm hoping that our dogs doesn't get it. I'm sure Freya won't because of her Advantage Multi prevents worms as well as heart worms.

Milo gets short 10 minute walks where, I'm hoping, isn't going to make his heart worms worse.
No, you don't need to freak out, especially since you've had him wormed... He is just passing the ones that the meds are knocking loose. I would pick up his poop right away so the other dogs don't fool with it, and that should take care of that problem, especially since they are also on a worming regimen. I'm sure that he will acclimate to the new food soon. I'm not familiar with heart worms... never heard of them in this area, though I know my daughter, in Houston area, says they have to be sure their dogs are treated for them.
Oh, you should look up Heart Worms. It isn't a pretty infestation at all. If they get full grown, they will completely take over the heart. I'm not well versed on the subject, but definitely...you should google it.
I talked to the vet and she blamed the anesthesia on his slow bowel movement. I'm kind of surprised it would effect him for so long but she knows better than me.

I asked her to deworm him again just in case. I guess she'll do that when they take the stitches out. But for right now, I take him potty in the front yard, away from our dogs, just to keep things semi ok. Hopefully, once the worms are taken care of...his coat will become pretty. I will admit that I am kind of dreading the impending bath as I'm not terribly sure how he's going to react to it. He really needs one though and I can't wait to give him one. The best I could do was a bath wipe I had around the house.
