This is why wolf-pack "dominance" models of behavioral correction are not always as effective as originally thought; domestic dogs are selected to retain adolescent-type, playful behavior throughout their lives. So when people say "it's not natural for dogs to mingle with strange dogs, as wolf packs never do that" the analogy is incomplete. It is true that adult wolves do not generally mingle and play with strange wolves, but adult dogs do not behave like adult wolves.
