How is the dog react if he Scare of an object
BJ is 6 months old, we went to the dog park today that we had been there once already, he walked good by my side and sniffed the surroundings, but he pull my leash when I try to get close to the 1 feet tall dog water fountain. I called him to come towards me at the fountain, he suddenly stop and back off 3 feet away and sit still, I try to call & pull him couple time, but he refused and pull my leash very hard and firm and stay in that position untill I walk away from that area.
How does the dog react when they frightened ? Cause' BJ will first back off and try to walk far way from it, and sometimes he start barking when he scare of an object, sometime he doesn't.
Such as a toy( a plastic ball can run by itself , can get it at walmart) i bought for him, I thought he would love it because his Herding Instinct, but he seemed so scare very time I put it on the floor, when he saw the ball moves, first he back-off and he barks. weird thing is he play fetch and tennis ball. why he so sensitive to that?
Also some objects that are not usually in the kitchen Floor, etc a broom, mop, a big cooking pot, a Jar, black garbage bag, supermarket bag, something about 1to2' in height. he will react the something, but he don't do that to humans or other dogs.
It is the react of aggression or fear or something else? How should I help him to overcome this issue?..

He's not very old, right? When Sidney was under 1 year old, he was spooked by the strangest things. He got over it over time.

Just try to get him used to any new items... maybe try to get him to come to you near the object with a treat... i would also maybe for the fountain thing... pick him up and take him to it and let him investigate it... and use calming words etc when you do it, maybe give a treat if he calms down and sniffs it a little... they do usually get used to things like that with age, but the more you get him used to things now, the better he will be later. For example with the vacuum. Kota goes wild barking at my vacuum when I turn it on and he bites at it and tries to drag it away from me... Try to get him used to things as early as you can. Thanks Kerry, thats a good point, I will try not over react myself...or try to focus him to adapt to the something so quickly, they need time to learn and get used to new things!

It has to be something with the breed. Seanna does not like anything being out of place...garbage cans, shoes, statues, etc...as well as barks at the vacuum and chases the mop....I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the herding, but haven't figured it out much. My husband used to swear she couldn't see very well until a friend got a corgi and he acted the same way...

is interesting...Thats exactly how my BJ reacted to the vacuum and all those not belong to that place.....maybe is something in the breed too...

Eddy is afraid of fire hydrants and orange safety cones. I just keep walking. I assume the more times they see it, they'll get over it..

He would walk very slowly and stare at it like he is hunting... and start growling.. as we get closer, he starts spazzing out and lunging and darting around on his leash, but does not want to approach it. I just ignore him, pull on the leash, walk by very close to it... he still lunges and barks, calms down once we are finally past it.

Just now, Sidney was very upset about something in the back yard. Not really scared, but upset and letting the whole neighborhood know about it. What was this grave threat to our safety? A plastic bag floating in the wading pool. :)
I removed the bag and now everything is A-OK!

When Finnigan encounters a new object that scares him he will get really low to the ground and inch forward. Sometimes he will growl as well. The closer he gets to it the jumpier he becomes. I try to let him figure it out for himself but if it isn't happening I will bend down and touch the object like I'm petting it and as he gets closer I praise him. He's more willing to come up and sniff it if I am touching it. I never let him walk away from something he is afraid of. I don't want to encourage a scaredy dog. :)
