For a dog that is a year old, how many potty breaks would you say are necessary? Obviously it will differ from one dog to another but I wanted to get an idea of how many times a day other people with a dog this age take him or her out.
1) First thing in the morning (sometimes once more before I leave for work, but not always)
2) As soon as I get home from work
3) After dinner (about 20 min after they get feed)
4) Right before bed
They also get let out as they "ask" which is usually 1-2 more times in the evening per dog (but sometimes they don't go potty when they "ask" they just want to go play or bark at the neighbor dog).
Ella is a little over a year old and this is what works for her.
First thing in the morning (7am), after I get home from work (1pm), before dinner (5pm), after my son goes to bed (8 pm), and before hubby/me go to bed (midnight). And with nice weather she will get extra walks. We don't have a fenced yard, so each one of these times is a walk with one of us.
Now what that works out to is about every 4-6 hours (7-8 at night).
However she can got up to 8 hrs, if needed.

We live in an apartment so we have to walk him everytime he needs to go potty as well. We were taking him out 6-8 times a day then slowly we've been cutting back. The past few months he's been going out 4-5 times and just recently we've moslty been doing 4 (never less than that).
I take him out in the morning before work (7am)
Then again on my lunch break (12pm)
Then my husband takes him out when he gets home from work (4:30pm-5pm)
And one of us takes him before bed (10pm)
I guess that sounds pretty average judging by the rest of your schedules. We've never left Finn crated for more than 6 hours unless it's while we're asleep but I know he should be able to hold it longer. I just feel bad because I think about how often I have to pee and I;m not sure I could hol it for 8 hours. Hmm, maybe I'll have to test that. :)
