Ok, so we all love vampires and with the Twilight saga complete and the movies coming out yearly, we need something to fill the void. How many of you have watched the True Blood show on HBO or read the books (the Sookie Stackhouse series)? I don't have HBO so I waited for the first season to come out on DVD then rented it and it was pretty awesome. I can't wait for the second season to come out so I can get caught up. While he's no Edward, vampire Bill is suave and mysterious and easy on the eyes as well. Sookie is played by Anna Paquin who I never used to like but this role is making me like her more. The books are enjoyable as well. They are an easy read as the Twilight saga is and they have a good storyline with plenty of twists and romance. If you haven't already, you may want to give the show and books a try!

I'm a big fan of vampire books in general and have read others including the Sookie Stackhouse novels (only 1 and 2 though). Unfortunately, I can't seem to get into them. I enjoy the plots for sure but for some reason the writing throws me off. After reading the first book I started watching True Blood and am halfway in the 2nd season but for some reason I can't get into them. I agree, though, that if people like vampire books/shows they should definitely give it a look because obviously a lot of people like them. =)
I watched the first season before reading the books and the first part of the first book was exactly like the show. I didn't think I was going to ready anymore of the books because it was word for word like the show, but then it started to have some differences and I found out that the first book covers the whole first season so I thought while I'm waiting for the 2nd season to come out, why not read the next book. I'd much rather read a book then see the movie, not vise versa. As I said, the writing is very simple so if you are looking for a literary masterpiece then keep looking but it's no more simple than Twilight so you just have to know that going into it. I fell in love with the show after the first couple episodes. I watched the whole season in 2 days! I think people will either really enjoy it or really hate it but so far I've come across only 2 people who didn't like it.

Cassie, are there any other vamp books you would suggest? I've read quite a few as well but would love to find something new.
(sorry, my response got kind of long)

Alice, off the top of my head I can think of two series. And, if you end up reading any of them you should let me know what you think. =)

The first is a series called House of Night. The authors (P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast) come out with a new book about once or twice a year so you can imagine that the books don't take very long to read. I believe that book #6 is coming out on October 27th. I love the plot, to be sure. However, it's written from the first person view of a 15 or 16 year old so for me it took a little getting passed that. In other words, the language can be a little juvenile. In fact, it's technically a young adult novel, but I can't help reading it because I really like the plot that much, and those are often pretty good anyway.

The second series, which I believe has better writing, is a series called Blue Bloods (name of the first book; by Melissa de la Cruz). There are 3 books out so far with the fourth also coming in October (leaving me with too much to read!). I really enjoy the plot for this one and it introduces some novel ideas about vampires that I haven't come across. I highly suggest this series to anyone who likes vampire books and the concept of vampires. I recommend House of Night second if you'd like a quick read. If the books aren't brand new I always check them out from the library first. House of Night used to come out straight to paperback which made it cheaper, but has since done hardback first and it might not be worth buying an edition that's twice as expensive unless you prefer hardback to paper.

One other just came to mind and it's not completely vampire based, but does involve vampires, werewolves, and other creatures if you enjoy that. It is a series by Cassandra Clare called The Mortal Instruments (first book is City of Bones). I suggest this one for anyone who enjoys the fantasy creature aspect in a real world setting. This one was a really good series!

Btw, if anyone has an interest in faerie books I have suggestions for those, too. =)
My sister in law is reading the Mortal Instrument books. She said they are very good. I agree that young adult books usually have great plots, but some are a bit too juvenile. I don't know why they don't write more adult novels with stories like that.

I love faerie books as well. My favorite is called Faerie Tale by Raymond E Feist. I also love all the Charles DeLint books which deal with a lot of Irish folklore as well as Native American and others.
I love True Blood. I haven't read the books though. A vampire serries I have heard really good things about is the Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts. The first book is called Morrigan's Cross. I haven't actually read it yet, but its on my list.... so much to read so little time.
Hmm, I haven't heard of that. Doesn't seem like something Nora Roberts would write about. I'll have to look it up!
I am a True Blood fan to be sure!! I haven't had a chance to read the books but i think I'm going to get some over the Winter and sit and read and eat as much as possible, well as much as Ed and Gem and Family let me!! The second season for me was not as good as the first, not enough of the Vampire lore and too much Maryann stuff... although she played her part excellently!! only towards the end did they start getting back to the vampire history storyline.. The Queen storyline is interesting and I really enjoyed watching Eric's relationship with Godric. If you haven't seen the second season yet, I hope I am not giving anything away!! When does the second season come out?? I have not read the "Blue Bloods series but I heard that it was good!!! Anyway, let me know what you think about the second season when you see it or if you are reading about it!!!
No, I have not watched the 2nd season yet. I have to wait for it to come out on DVD which is said to be sometime before Christmas. Hopefully it will be sooner than that. Don't worry though, you didn't give anything away. I had heard that the 2nd season deals a lot more with Maryann. I can't wait to watch it.

Anyone try the True Blood drink yet? I think it's only sold online and I kind of want one just to have the bottle. :)
Is Maryann a character in the books or did they add this for TV viewing? I have not tried the True Blood drink yet.....
I haven't read all the books yet but she has not been mentioned in the books so far.
What book are you on right now???? Are you on Facebook??? There is a good vampire game on there right now I am playing....you can create your own look and then you have missions to complete to get your fangs, more cool clothes and befriend the Elders etc.. kind've fun at Halloween time, although I'm not the best at it yet!!!
I'm only on the third book. I didn’t start reading them until after I watched the first season on DVD. Now I’ve taken a break to read something else that I had been waiting for.

I'm not on Facebook. I've been thinking about it, but I don't know if I have time for that and this. The game sounds fun though. :)

Have you been watching Vampire Diaries? I have and I'm not sure what I think about it yet. The main characters are like cheap Bella and Edward imitations.
