Treats are obviously an important aspect of training. I was wondering what other people were using w/ their pups. I find most treats to be too big for her to handle w/out working on them for a bit, and I worry about overfeeding her during training sessions. Mostly I've just been chopping up the little cylindrical treats, or tearing bits off the soft square kind.

What have others done in re: to this issue?

I use Charlee Bears, they're all natural and only 3 calories each! Also, try breaking the treats into tiny pieces. Or, you can even use kibble (of course, you would have to feed him/her less when it's time for them to eat!)
I use pea-sized pieces of cheese. :| It's the only thing my puppy will go for, as he's weirdly unmotivated by most food. Especially for a corgi! My vet says he's in really good shape though, so I guess it's been okay to use the cheese so far. I know some people can treat their dogs with veggies, like pieces of baby carrots, and I think that's awesome! I wish my dog would go for it.
I tried giving Beulah little pieces of carrot after reading this, and she loves them! She has to work on them for a minute before eating them up though. Maybe the pieces I'm giving her are too big. But I'm sure as she gets bigger she'll get quicker w/ them. Anyway, I'm stoked she loves them. They're one of my favorite foods. I eat about a pound of them a week. So I'll always have plenty of treats on hand for her. Assuming her tastes don't change :-/
you can also use a clicker, but i don't know if it will confuse your pup now that she is used to treats?
Yeah, I have been trying to use the clicker during training sessions. But sometimes, in the spur of the moment I forget, and I worry about the lack of consistency. Also, Beulah seems to have no idea that the clicker's even there. But, who knows, I could be wrong about that.
Upon a recommendation by fellow class members at our dog training club where I am taking a class, I use hotdogs cut into tiny bits. I've been using turkey hotdogs to cut down on the fat. If I know when we are doing a training session I just cut down on her regular food that night so the calories balance out. I've tried other treats but she is VERY motivated my those hotdog bits!
I have been using the "Nutro Natural Choice Crunchy Treats either Real Berries or Real Apple for Bella. I do break them in half because I think they are a little large. But I also use the Pup-Peroni because I can break them into smaller pieces. I don't think the Pup-Peroni's are as good for her as the other ones. Good luck!
