corgi festivals
hey every one:) sorry to post alot of things but im still learning about corgis and love everyones help and advice. i was informed that in SC there is a corgi festival on james island on the 13th i REALLY REALLY want to go! but i did have a few questions (some of them are my husbands lol) ok, i just teddys 2nd round of shots on the 6th, would be ok to take him to the festival?? and my hubby wants to know what is the food situation, do we bring are own, buy (if so how much) or is it free? and for some odd reason he want to bring are dachshund but its a CORGI festival so im not sure, can he bring him or no? and whats it like there? i know it will be a lot of fun:)! but i just want to know what to expect, like the activities going on. sorry for all the questions but i thank you for taking the time to read this and answer some of them. i really hope i can bring teddy to it, he would love it but im worried that the shots wont kick in and he could catch something ( not saying that you dont take care of your babys just that he could get it any where, but you know what i mean:) thanks again!!!

Hi Rebecca, I'm not in your area so I know nothing about the festival but I can tell you that most people choose to wait until their puppy has all of his/her shots before exposing them to other dogs or areas where many other dogs have been such as a dog park. Some people believe after the third round of shots it's ok but we asked our vet and he advised us to wait until all shots were given, and after getting the last shot you must wait two weeks for it to take effect. If your puppy has only had two rounds of shots, I would not take him. When the time comes that he is ready to go to the festival, I'm sure you can bring your other dog even though it is not a Corgi. thank you for letting me know:) im glad i didnt make the mistake by taking him and getting him sick. i will wait until he is older and then take him. he will get two more rounds of shots so a total of four puppy shots. but when is he due for more shots after his last round of puppy shots?

His last round of boosters will also be when he gets his rabies shot. usually they will get another round of boosters and rabies at a year of age and then it depends on what your state requires as far as rabies go (ours requires every 3 years) and the boosters depend on what your vet feels is right and of course you can take part in that decision as well. Our vet gives the boosters every 3 years as well which I'm ok with. I would not want them to be given any more often than that and it is believed that they are good for even longer than 3 years. thank you, i was a little worried that i wasn't giving him enough but he is getting four rounds and in the last round he gets his rabies shot. on the 23 is when he gets his 3rd round. i think they only give the one year rabies shot but i will ask for the 3 year one to be sure. i talk to them a lot to make sure i am doing the right thing for him. but do you know what round they get the kennel cough vaccine? i know it goes up there nose so i hope he will be cooperative lol

Bordetella is given in the nose and is only good for one year. We got it for Finn as a puppy but when he got his shots again when he turned one we opted not to get it. The vet said unless we are going to board him it isn't really necessary and that if we do decide to board him, just bring him in for the Bordetella vaccine a week beforehand.
I'm sure your vet will continue to give the rabies shot after one year of age. They will administer it based on what your state requires. Some do it every year and as I said, here in AZ it is every 3 years. Some vets want to give all of the shots every year but the boosters (Parvo, Distemper etc) do not need to be given any more frequently than three years.

thank you for the info:), i wasn't sure about that. im sure are state requires a rabies shot every year. i dont think we will board teddy unless its an emergency and we cant take him. other wise he will be with us or watched by are family

Hi Rebecca: I have three corgis and have been to many meet up groups and corgi picnics. My advice is to let your corgi get past it's sixth month barkday before going to your first gathering. Usually each corgi picnic will have a web site giving food parameters, etc. There may be an entry fee, some are pot luck, bring your own plates, etc., there are fun auctions benefitting CorgiAid, etc. All the best, Nan

i agree, it is better to wait. i guess i just got to excited and forgot about the length it takes for the shots to kick in. i look forward when i can go. thanks for the info:D
